ALBUM OF THE MONTH Mixed by Lawrence - Timeless 19/08/2011 (Cocoon)

GUESTLIST ALEXIS RAPHAEL Hailing from Camden, this DJ has quietly been making his mark on the House scene

It does what it says on the tin: Peter Kersten’s newest offering is an enduring synthesis of modern

sensuality Being Germany’s gateway to the world, the port city of Hamburg has always had a rather special affinity with America. It is not surprising, then, that Peter M. Kersten a.k.a Lawrence, has had a deep musical and spiritual relationship with the Detroit Techno aesthetic for over a decade. His label, Dial Rec, which he runs together with Carsten Jost, stands, more than almost any other European imprint,

for the value-conscious cultivation of high-

quality, melancholy Techno. After seven albums under producer aliases Lawrence and Sten, Kersten now continues the perfection of his sound vision through the mixing and compiling of this stunning DJ mix album. Timeless is light years away from the standard modern mix compilation; it is dogmatically fused from the latest releases, but rather celebrates Electronic dance music as a timeless, sensual component of life. With instinctive certainty, Kersten covers 16 years of living club history without ever becoming anachronistically nostalgic or losing sight of the acoustic ‘here and now’.

ARTIST OF THE MONTH Benedetti x Bianco

Some clever little artists have taken questionable sounds from sport and turned them into banging tunes.

TECH-NIS?

A collaboration from two of South America’s hottest House heads

South American mavericks Nacho Benedetti and Franco Bi- anco have come together to marry their Argentinian and Uru- guay traditions, snipped and cut for a sharper dance floor. They mould sweet Spanish nuthin’s with a dribbling Techno heart, and loose sways of pending atmospheres smother guitar strums caught on a paper cut beat. A gloriously ecstatic pair, their collaboration brings a conscious sense of experimentation into the listener’s own dancing: ‘A project born of the need for expression in directing the dance floor without complexes or gender distinction.’ So leave your routine and qualms at home, turn up the Techno and let the Spanish serenade surprise you. Detail curates a worldwide tour with Benedetti & Bianco live at Basing House in Dalston, London on the 9th September 2011. Get your early bird tickets now!

You come home from work to find your housemate watching Wimbledon re-runs playing across the screen and multiple-orgasmic screeches echoing along the court and blaring from the speak- ers. Sharapova’s squealing forte reached a record of 116 decibels at this year’s Wimbledon, the equiva- lent to a jet plane taking off. It has become a consistent complaint for both the opponent and the sensi- tive listener; BBC’s coverage had to develop the ability to control the balance between commentary and court atmosphere through your television to moderate the some- what cringe-worthy experience. Could this make bedroom produc- ing an even more accessible art? Popping balls, the raw sound of a rowdy crowd and the rev of Formula One engines have inspired a melange of Electronic music, and with the Olympics around the corner and London living in an age of forward-thinking Dance music, could the two come hand in hand to create a different pitch altogether? We’ve collated a playlist of sport- inspired tracks to get your creative juices going; take advantage of license-free sampling and bring a dictaphone to your next match.

1. TENNIS DJ Koze - 40 Love

DJ Koze melts the snap of the ball and the shuffling of footwork into something serene and tech- friendly with a transition as taut as the strings of the racket.

2. PING PONG Flying Lotus ft. Laura Darlington - Table Tennis

Fly Lo has a practised hand in make-shift sampling. He captures the empty haunt of the ball, framing it with evening guitar jams and Darlington’s hollow cry.

3. BASKETBALL Memory Tapes - Green Knight

Dayve Hawk’s sampling of basketball dribbling breaks the song in two; the first half is for pensive reflection while the second is for spinning around your room.

4. AUTO RACING Inspectah Deck ft. Street Life & U God - Grand Prix

This 1999 classic leads with an advanced example of revving and slalom-ing engines. Aggressive and frantic.

Underground music is at an all time high right now, with different forms morphing into one another and tracks being released every- day from producers all over the world. One such producer making waves at the moment is Alexis Raphael. For many, this may be the first you have heard of him, but he has been operating on the scene for quite some time. His Sunday party, Creche, which he co-promotes with partner in crime Cozzy D (Lower East, 1Trax), has become an East London rave institution, with quality headliners including Lee Foss, Maya Jane Coles and Deniz Kurtel gracing the decks. Besides the rise of Creche, whose sounds the pair have also taken to Ibiza, Raphael has been simmering up a storm with his recent release on Jamie Jones & Lee Foss’s Hot Waves imprint and his slick EP,‘ Kitchens & Bedrooms, on Cozzy D’s co- owned label Lower East features remixes from Lee Foss, Richy Ahmed, Volante and Russo. With friends like these, tight DJ skills and more quality releases, Alexis Raphael is this month’s one to watch.
