NIGHTJAR www.barnightjar.com

Imagine having the chance to go back and party in the 1920s; drinking the first cocktails ever made, seeing Al Capone dealing his dirty business and dancing in the secret bars. Now you can, at Nightjar, a secret bar inspired by the ban of alcohol sales in the US during the 1920s. Bars became illegal, so people started setting up their own! According to the founder, the attraction of Nightjar is its combination of live music, drinks and atmosphere all in one place. As for Nightjar’s drinks, they also have a little secret. Keeping with the underground, improvised feel, the bar serves a huge amount of home-made bitters, liquors and much more, which means that you won’t find their

beverages anywhere else. They’ve certainly got creative with their drinks; the ‘secret cocktail’ contains egg yolk, orange syrup, gin and Calvados among other things, so you can guarantee a truly unique experience! Although the secret bar is not being advertised, it is still possible to book a table (if you can find it, of course.)

Bourne and Hollingsworth started their own secret club nights three years ago, emulating the Prohibition parties of the 1920s. Even before jumping on the secret bar bandwagon Bourne and Hollingsworth specialised in vintage cocktails, serving drinks in tea cups with cake on the side! The creators wanted to offer Londoners something imaginative and creative, hence coming up with themed parties, the first of which were held in the basement in true, clandestine style. Bourne and Hollingsworth’s first parties only catered to about sixty people, but within three months they had to be moved out to a larger

venue due to their rapidly-growing popularity. They also boast an experimental drinks menu, with a variety of cocktails ranging from the classics to some newbies with an earl grey syrup twist! Bourne and Hollingsworth’s newest event, an 1890s-inspired fantasy party, debuted last year. Taken directly from the absinthe-fuelled madness of Paris in the 1890s, people come from all over to party like it’s 1899. Book yourself a table at Bourne and Hollingsworth now to take a break from the 21st century and access the exclusive world of London’s secret bars.
