So, how are you guys? Well, we are all fine; we are in the studio working on a new remix. It’s the four of us trying to make some sounds, kicks, bass and snares.
Sick. So what are Dirtyphonics about? Our first vision was to make music because we were all working in different places and we were just mad on making music, and that’s how we came about. The passion of making music and then playing live around the world...
Paris isn’t that famed for its drum & bass scene. What is it like nowadays? Well, since a long time we have had drum and bass parties, and most of the big DJs all come from England. So, like 10 years ago, there was never a French headlin- ing. Now we’ve done Dirtyphonics it’s changed a little bit; we can headline all parties in France. France always has drum & bass parties and you get like at least in Paris 1000 people for a big party, so it’s still on, you know? I guess now with the internet all the world is getting into production so there
are no barriers between people in the city and out of the city. Every- one is making music, and it’s good.
So who originally influenced you? We all started from different back- grounds. Some of us come from hip-hop; others were in mellow bands, so basically we all listen to ‘90s and 2000s music and that’s all our influences. Whether its rap, metal, hip-hop or house it’s just something we found in drum and bass, and then by making drum and bass we wanted to make electro and dubstep. Any bass-like music, we like.
I recently saw you at Proud2; it was a banging show. Did you enjoy it? Yes, it was really a good gig for us. We had to leave the place after because we had another gig in London, so we couldn’t party at Proud2, but it was still a good party when we played. And the crowd was great.
So there are four of you. When you are in the studio, how does production work? Well, right now we’re in the studio. One of us is on the computer; the other is on a laptop or playing with synthesizers or machines. We all try to go forward as a team.
Production takes a little longer sometimes, but it’s better when you have four people that are happy with something. Then you know you have got something.
If you could collaborate with any artists who would it be? I’m just asking the others hold on… [Laughing]. Charlie says Axl Rose. Well, I’d like to work with Method Man because I’m a hip-hop listener myself. Just stuff like that; anything can be good
come from the CDJs which are mixed with other tracks. It comes from the idea to be on stage all together and have real band stuff going on as when we are playing the tunes. So it’s a little bit more risky because we don’t just press play. We are playing all the bass- lines so we can go wrong but, you know, when it’s four people you always manage to keep on going because it’s like a band.
What’s your favourite Dirty-
“It’s the four of us trying to make some sounds, kicks, bass and snares.”
you know.
Your live show is pretty differ- ent to anyone else’s. Where did the idea come from and what is happening? Well, basically it came from the gear we had in our studio. We can play all the lines on the MPCs, which are basically samplers. We play the beats by just mixing them. So basically, live, one part is played by the MPC (it’s all the bass- lines and stuff), and all the beats
phonics song to play to a crowd? That’s a hard question. Well, definitely something that works all the time and drives people crazy is ‘Vandals’ and also as well we get really hyped because it’s a song that was out maybe a year and a half ago, and when we still play it, it goes crazy each time. So we are happy to play it each time we are in any city.
So where do you want to see your live shows go in the future? We’ve done some big festivals this year, and I guess in the future: big- ger festivals. Even if it’s in a small club we just want to play wherever people are crazy and go crazy. We want the riot to happen!
So you’ve been doing lots of remixes for the likes of Skril- lex, and you also released the ‘Tarantino’ EP recently, but are there any plans for an album? We got lots of remixes coming up. We’ve already mixed Nero, Bloody Beetroots and Benny Benassi, so lots of other stuff is coming. We are being productive in the studio right now and we’re trying to make an album while we make the re- mixes. So everything is going well and I hope that people like it.
If you were to put on a rave and could choose any three artists, who would they be? I’m asking all the others…. [Laughs]. One of us is saying Me- tallica. Prodigy man, the stuff that caught our attention and made us addicted to music.
Three specifically? In a big show playing with us you mean? Steve Aoki [laughs]. Daft Punk, and Method Man and Slash.
And I like old blues men so I’d get some old blues man like maybe Buddy Guy. It will be Metallica, Dirtyphonics and Buddy Guy.
So if you were invisible for a day what would you do? Well…Erm [pauses]... Music.
Really? Yeah man, it’s not work at all. It’s not a job. For me it’s just pleasure so it would be music. Thomas would be thinking. Charlie said, “sex in the kitchen”. I didn’t mean sex in the kitchen. I mean cooking and sex. Pitch-In also says music; he’d be mixing for 10 hours.
Have you got any exclusives for TGN? We’re doing a world tour! We’re going to USA, New Zealand, Aus- tralia and all around Europe and Asia. We have our debut album that we are working on; I can’t give a date but it’s next year. We have lots of singles going on and lots of remixes.
