GUESTLISTRECOMMENDS THE ANTLERS

Indie rock band flung into the spotlight by label French Kiss Records

Emerging from Peter Silberman’s New York bedroom, the Antlers was originally a New York city solo project. Taking their band name from The Microphones’ song of the same name, Silberman recorded ‘Uprooted’ and ‘In the Attic of the Universe’ in said bedroom all by himself. These days Silberman has joined forces with Michael Lerner and Darby Cicci to create what is now the Antlers trio, with two new EPs, ‘Cold War’ and ‘New York Hospitals’, and 2009 album Hos- pice under their belt. This fascinat- ing and incredibly diverse album, based on a relationship between a terminally ill patient and their hos- pice worker, sold out straightaway and the band subsequently signed to New York based French Kiss Re- cords. This led to the guys opening for 2010’s Primavera Sound Festi- val, with Silberman quoted as say- ing of their sudden success: “We bit off more than we could chew!” Bust Apart, the highly anticipated follow up to Hospice, dropped in May 2010; the typically tricky fol- low-up album draws its influences from electronic music and doesn’t disappoint. These guys blew up out of nowhere and blew us away - defi- nitely one to watch!

Following the success of their 2010 album Odd Blood, Yeasayer are set to bestow their fans with a worthy follow-up this summer from their first double A-side featuring ‘Sunrise’ and ‘2080’. Yeasayer are rapidly establishing themselves as heavyweights, having boosted their credentials over the past 3 years with ventures including part- producing Bat for Lashes’ 2009 album Two Suns and remixing Florence and the Machine’s hit single ‘Dog Days Are Over’.May the 23rd of this year saw them successfully debut their new track ‘The Devil and the Deed’ on Conan O’Brien’s late night television show, which consequently created a flurry of rave reviews.

Currently in the middle of a one- and-a-half-month tour of America, the band is tipped to hit the studio when they get home. In an email to their fans, they divulged hints of their summer project: “We have three or four new songs on this tour to fine-tune and fix before we head into the studio this summer. Yes, record number three is in the works! Keeping it brief because it should be.” It took a hillside retreat in Woodstock followed by a polish and shine in New York City to create Odd Blood, so fingers crossed that the boys from Brooklyn have found a suitable hideaway haven to get the creative juices flowing.
