GUESTLISTRECOMMENDS SIGMA
Drum and Bass duo Sigma combine tried and tested sounds with contemporary features and get up there to play with the top dogs
Cameron Edwards and Joe Lenzie, a.k.a. Sigma, have been making themselves known on the UK Drum and Bass scene since 2007; despite their ultimately mainstream approach to production, the pair have proven themselves able to combine key attributes of both old and new styles of D&B to create a fresh sound. This is apparent with the floor-filler ‘Nexus’, where percussive jungle influences are juxtaposed with the grandeur of jump-up melodies to create the
Ifan Dafydd
Up-and-comer Ifan is one to watch as he infiltrates Dubstep with music fit to soundtrack your dreams
Sub-genre names should never be taken as gospel, but the easiest way of describing Ifan’s ‘post-Dub- step’ aesthetic is as a holy trinity of interplay between Dubstep, Ambient and Minimal. His new track, ‘Miranda’, stuns with its deep sub-bass, ghostly distorted vox and a schizophrenic underpinning rhythm that forcibly wills your body to move. Meanwhile ‘No Good’, a dark sample-based collage of Amy Winehouse’s ‘I’m No Good’, comes complete with a video remix and
shows that Ifan is not one to shy away from reworking a popular hit, to the point that it is practically unrecognisable. The mystique currently surrounding Ifan stems from certain conspiracy-theorist musings regarding his ‘real’ iden- tity, but we won’t repeat them here (to the curious: Google him). We sincerely hope they aren’t true, if only to know that there are at least two people out there pulling these soundscapes from the recesses of their minds.. Keep ‘em coming, Ifan.
ultimate drop for the urban jungle lover. The pair stepped up to the big time with crowd-pleasing tracks such as ‘All Blue’ and ‘Paint it Black’, and have since achieved high status on the mainstream DnB scene after walking away with the ‘Best Breakthrough DJs’ trophy. What else to look forward to from Sigma? Only a weekly live podcast set to feature guests such as Goldie, DJ Fresh and IC3... Wow, we’re spoilt!

Distance mixes Dubstep Allstars Vol. 8 Loads of dubplates on the Rinse FM DJ’s latest mix for Tempa
The C.V. of Greg Sanders, a.k.a. Dubstep mastermind Distance, must be a sight to behold. The lauded producer, DJ and owner of record label Chestplate is now a member of Tempa’s elite club of revered selectors, having become the eighth artist to be granted the privilege of creating a Dubstep Allstars compilation. The back
catalogue list of guest mixers reads like a who’s who of the main proponents of the genre, with such icons as Kode9, Appleblim and Youngsta already fixtures in the Allstar Hall of Fame. Volume 8 has shaped up to be a sub-driven tour de force; it bends to the artistic vision of Distance by showcasing his Dubstep/Break-
step influences and the darker, more atmospheric side of the genre whilst maintaining a steady flow of delicious drops to assuage any pent-up bass-cravings. The album features lots of his own new music and provides a satisfy- ing selection of tracks from his contemporaries LX ONE, Cyrus, Tunnidge and Benga to name a
formidable few. And of course, true to traditional Dubstep fashion, eighteen of the twenty-five featured records are dubplates. Dubstep Allstars Vol. 08 is poised for release on the 22nd of August, so save all of your coppers until then; it will be money well spent.
