ALBUM OF THE MONTH Red Hot Chili Peppers - I’m With You

We got a hold of the French Synth-Pop trio, currently busy working on their new album, and found out a bit more about what their band name really means...

RHCP to release their tenth studio album come the end of August

After the departure of John Frusciante, the Red Hot Chili Peppers are back to what they do best and this summer’s comeback release of I’m With You signals their tenth studio album. Josh Klinghoffer will replace the former member as the quar- tet’s lead guitarist, with front- man Anthony Kedis quoting: “There is no question - this is the beginning”. I’m With You

marks the band’s longest gap between studio albums and draws on influences from the Rolling Stones. Expect creep- ing bass lines and textural guitar detail as the album develops, with more focus on melody than riffs and a “con- nection between feeling and song” according to bassist Flea. Their UK tour kicks off in December.

ARTIST OF THE MONTH White Denim

First of all, I have to ask THE question... Why Pony Pony Run Run?! Gaetan: OK, the real reason isn’t very glamorous! I was in the toilet and I just thought, “Oh yeah, why not Pony Pony Run Run?” So I came out and asked the others guys and they said OK. That’s it. Not funny, not funky, not cool, not rock.

What do you think about when you’re writing your songs? What kind of messages do you want to convey? Gaetan: Every song is different and sometimes the lyrics just come from nowhere. All the songs are about teenagers... Love sometimes; it is really Pop music so 90% of the time they are love songs. But yeah... I don’t have any big message - it’s just something simple.

If each of you had to choose a word to describe your music, what would it be? Antonin: ‘Véritable’ (‘true’ in English). Gaetan: ‘Love’, I think. Amaël: I think ‘riot’. I don’t know why. Just to make it punchy. Gaetan: Yeah, for the Rock & Roll attitude!

You’ve performed loads of times in London; which is your favourite venue to play at? All together: KOKO!!! Definitely... Antonin: We played twice in KOKO. Both times were really cool!

You’ve been playing together since 2005 and you’re always on tour. How do you deal with being around each other all the time? Gaetan: We can’t stand each other... Antonin: First of all, they’re

almost dead. Amaël: But nice!

What’s the best way for a Rock star to go out in style? Amaël: In a swimming pool of champagne! Gaetan: Or in a swimming pool full of vomit! Antonin: Suffocating in poo! It should be the next step beyond!

How many marshmallows can you put in your mouth at the same time? Gaetan: One time Antonin ate

“In ten years we see ourselves fat, deaf, stupid and almost dead...”

brothers (Gaetan & Amaël). When you’re three it is like a triangle. With four it is more complicated. Gaetan: I think we are lucky because it’s difficult for most bands to live together but we’re just friends and we have fun every night, going to parties and working everyday. Day and night...

As a band, how do you see yourself in ten years? Gaetan: Dead! Amaël: Fat! Gaetan: Or stupid. Like our sound engineer: fat, deaf, stupid and

about 13 little sausages all together. We were impressed... Amaël: He almost died! All together: Bravo Pepe! You’re the one, the best!

What is the funniest question that you’ve ever been asked during an interview? *Ahem* Gaetan: Funniest? Ahhh, the last one you asked! Antonin: Every question you asked! Amaël: You’re number one!

Aw, thank you guys! So can you give us an exclusive?

Apparently you’ve started recording a new album... Gaetan: The best album ever! No, we are happy with it because the lyrics are deeper than our first album. All the songs are made but not recorded. Anything’s possible. We can do what we want with it. Now we have the songs we can just take a guitar and a synthesizer and make the music so it’s very exciting for us. We’re recording in the South of France and the ocean is just 1 km away from the studio. It’s like a holiday and work at the same time!

Lucky you! Last question: if you could fill a swimming pool with anything, what would it be? Gaetan: Vomit! Amaël: Champagne! Antonin: Poo! Gaetan: Champagne with strawberries and vodka! Amaël: And Cointreau! Gaetan: Naked girls! Antonin: Plastic ducks! Amaël: Jelly fish! Antonin: Potatoes!

The band haven’t set a release date for their upcoming album yet but keep an eye out for it on www.myspace.com/ ponyponyrunrun (and don’t let them near any swimming pools!)

With a fourth album and a new fourth member, things are looking big for this Texan band

This now four-piece rock band from Austin Texas are renowned for their intense looping and unusual song structures and have recently released their much antici- pated album, D. How did it all begin for the band? Well, they started by making their 7” EP Let’s Talk About It in 2007, giving rise to a tour which in turn spawned another nine song tour EP Workout Holiday. White Denim later released their previous tour

EP as their debut album, which was then followed by their debut U.S full length LP entitled Explosion. Their third full length album, Fits, released in 2009, was another storming success, and although their fourth D, may have been 2 years in the making, these guys don’t show any sign of lowering the bar. White Denim just keep going from strength to strength!
