ALBUM OF THE MONTH Jill Scott - ‘The Light of the Sun’

Issue 29 / July 2011

Jilly from Philly is back! Let’s take a look at what she brought with her

After 11 years on the scene and three Grammy awards, Jill Scott has released her fourth album, The Light of the Sun, and it is everything any fan could desire. Inspired by her recent relationships, conversations on self-esteem with teenage girls and Grand Marnier, her latest offering is, in her own words, “revealing”. Full of Jazz, Hip-Hop and Rhythm and Blues touches, the most interesting aspect is nonethe- less the freestyle element of the album. Although Scott has said that she can’t take credit for writing the album, do not be

mislead; this is not to say the words are not her own, only that she did not literally write them down. Much of the record was freestyled in the studio, which only adds to the lyrics’ honesty and rawness. Scott started out as a spoken word artist so it is no surprise that she still manages to speak so affectingly about relationships, love and being a woman - the key themes on the album. In her spoken word ‘Womanifesto’ Scott declares that she is a ‘motherf*cking G’; we at The Guestlist Network are inclined to agree.

60 SECONDS WITH... FAZER N-DUBZ

Hazal @guestlist.net

Hi man, what do you get up to when you’re back in your home town? It feels good to be back, I go to Camden town and head over to my hood to see my friends.

What were your musical influ- ences whilst you were growing up? When I was 8 years old I heard Hip-hop for the first time so I grew up listening to Mobb Deep, Rae- kwon, Wu-tang, 36 Chambers and then Jay-Z later on. ‘80s music is probably still the most predomi- nant thing on my iPod.

Cool so you’ve been travelling and performing loads recently? Yeah we recently finished our UK

Arena Tour and I’ve just shot a video for Dappy’s first solo single called ‘No Regrets’. Played at lots of festivals, too!

So what have you got planned for the rest of the week? As soon as I leave you guys I’m heading straight back up to Oxford to the studio, I’ve got a couple of new sessions up there this week and a new boy band - very Indie. You cant put N-Dubz in a box!

What’s been one of the biggest achievements for N-Dubz? Well we were the first people to sell out at The 02 Arena for our genre of music man, for us that’s a monumental, a landmark in our career shall we say.

Do you party during your time off? No, when you get time off you don’t think about going out

ARTIST OF THE MONTH Snoop Dogg

One multi-award-winning third of the N-Dubz team tells us about his musical influences, what is on his iPod and how he spends his free time

because you work in nightclubs so the last place you wanna go is a club you know?

So you have your new DVD coming out, which everyone wants to hear about? It’s a tour DVD from the show Love.Live.Life that we did at The O2 Arena, it completely sold out and there were nineteen and a half thousand people there!

How did that make you feel? Booom!! Amazing, there was a point where we were on stage at the beginning of the show and I was like wow! I had goosebumps!

So we’ve got three very special Guestlist Network questions for you, if you could fill a swimming pool full of anything what would it be? Probably girls. I’d just fill it with a whole lot of sexy girls.

What would you do if you were invisible for a day? I’d probably go and see what the queen gets up to... Go down to Buckingham Palace and see whats going on, move a couple of things here and there and make people think they’re crazy.

Finally, when you party, who do you party with? 1.8 million records sold, I’m Fazer from N-Dubz and when I party, I party with The Guestlist Network! Holding it down 24/7.

The star who stole the show at Love- box is raising big money for charity

Check out their new DVD Love.Live.Life: Live at the O2 which is out on Aug 22nd. Go to ndubz.com for more info.

The legendary Snoop Dogg has teamed up with leading charity bidding site Charitybuzz to raise some dollar. The rapper has two organisations in mind, namely Urban Farming, an organization dedicated to the production of organic food with the establishment of gardens on unused land and his very own charity, the Snoop Youth Football League - and plans to auction off a day spent

with him in the studio while he works on his new album to raise the cash. Sounds pretty sick to us! The day with the Hip-Hop extraordinaire is worth a staggering $50,000(!) but will be money well spent for whoever comes out on top as the higher bidder, heading straight into the helping hands of these two worthy charities. Good on you, Snoop.
