UPDATE — SUMMER 2010

Celebrate the summer with us!

Dear Residents,

S

ummer is a season of celebrations! From graduations, to receptions, to special events, there are many reasons to gather together and celebrate friends, family and community this summer at the

DownersGrove ParkDistrict.Plus,we’ve expanded our birthday party services and improved rental amenities tomeet your celebration needs. Besides the perfect space at the Golf Course Clubhouse, Recreation Center and Lincoln Center for your showers, parties ormeetings, we’ve got park pavil- ions and a synthetic turf field for outdoor church groups, family reunions or fundraisers. The official kick-off to summer will begin May 25th with our Family Concert Series held in

Fishel Park on Tuesday eveningswith live bands and kids’ entertainment. While the parkmay look different this year with no permanent bandshell structure in place, concerts will go on as planned with construction of a new bandshell due to begin late summer after the concerts conclude. Another summer celebration you don’t want to miss is theWashington Park Grand Opening!

In 2008, the District entered into an Intergovernmental Agreement with the Village of Downers Grove to help mitigate severe flooding in our neighborhoods.Washington Park was selected as a site forVillage stormwater improvements which facilitated several upgrades to the park amenities as part of the reconstruction process. A pavilion, two soccer fields, upgraded softball field with permanent seating, new play equipment, fountain, plaza and ornamental featuresmake this park one of the premier spaces in Downers Grove. Be sure to join us at the ribbon cutting event ten- tively planned for July 2010. July also brings our annual Independence Day celebration on July 4th.Hosted by theMuseum,

this year’s event will be held at the corner of Main and Warren Avenue in downtown Downers Grove. The festivities begin with a reading of the Declaration of Independence by Ben Franklin followed by theVillage’s Independence Day parade. Perhaps your idea of celebration is to enjoy the simple pleasures of summer and a break from

the daily grind. Take the family for a dip with a daily Splash Pass atMaple Hill Pool or enjoy the scenerywith a day on the course at theDownersGroveGolf Club. Site of the originalChicagoGolf Club founded in 1892, the first 18-hole course in theUnited States, now 9-hole, 3,200 yard course boasts beautiful fairways, and well-maintained greens and tees. If you’re a frequent visitor, you’ll notice the recent improvements made to the course including construction of a new rear 1st tee, tee improvements on the 2nd, 4th and 9th holes and the completion of cart paths. As you can see, there are so many ways to celebrate right here in your own backyard. We hope you choose to celebrate with us this summer. The opportunities are endless!

Sincerely,

Bob Gelwicks, Park Board President
