CLUB REPORT SHROPSHIRE
COMBINED CALF SHOW On 26th September Shropshire held our Combined Calf Show at Barbers’ Auction Mart, Market Drayton, held jointly with Stafford and Western Clubs, There were 45 handlers and 98 calves, Ann Laird from Galaxy Holsteins judged the showmanship and congratulated everyone for making her job far from straightforward. Andrew Holliday from Edenholme Holsteins was tasked with judging the calves. Again, not an easy task as Andrew commented frequently on the high standard of animals presented. We could not take on these events without the support of generous sponsors who allow us to cover costs both at the qualifier and eventually at the All Britain at Malvern.
STUDY TOUR On 30th September, 31 members travelled to Cumbria

for our annual study tour where we were warmly greeted by each host.
Our first stop was at Colin
and Yvonne Dents’ Bridgend Holsteins at Kirkby Thore. We enjoyed a huge lunch before heading out to look at the new 80 point rotary parlour in operation and the 900 cows and housing. Much debate could be heard about land, feeding, buildings and of course milk price.
The next morning we headed to Stephen Brough’s Carrick Holsteins at Buckabank, Dalston. Members were shown the recently installed robot milkers in operation and again much debate ensued about building design, investment and breeding.
Kevin and Christine Wilson’s
Warnelview herd was the next stop. After an introduction by Kevin we headed into the cow house which is built over the biggest slurry store we had ever
seen. Being bedded on sand caused much discussion with all questions fully answered. We viewed the 400 cows and like all of our visits saw a really good herd of cows.
The young stock rearing was highly impressive and it was here that we saw perhaps the cow of the tour with Final Cut Nita, - scored 96, but we all reckon she is easily 97 points. Finally, we visited the new dairy unit at Newton Rigg where Jonathan Fisher showed us around, with again, much debate on shed design and layout, bedding, solar power and also green bedding. This demonstrated the common theme throughout this tour, whole-hearted commitment and investment in the dairy industry
