Beneknowle-bred heifer leads September Sedgemoor sale


A call of 1900gns secured the top price at Greenslade Taylor Hunt’s September sale. Leading the sale was the August calved heifer Beneknowle Twist Joy 97 from P J Andrews. Out of a VG85 scored dam, she sold giving 37.7kg.


Averages: cows in milk £1722, heifers in milk £1754.20, in-calf and served heifers £1125, bulling heifers £807, yearling heifers £747, heifer calves £426. (Greenslade Taylor Hunt).


Record entry at Beeston Mid Month


A record entry of 368 freshly calved cows and heifers were catalogued for Wright Marshall’s Mid Month Sale on 13th October. A top price of £2350 was achieved twice, the first being Deri Thunder Eliza from D R Evans and Co. Sired by a homebred Bolton son, she sold giving 42kg a day to Russell Evans, Pembrokeshire. At the same money was Dilandy Dempsey Tabitha from Andrew Shakeshaft. This heifer is out of a GP84 scored dam by Million that is herself out of the prize winning Dilandy Debonair Tabitha Red EX92. Sold giving about 31kg, she joins Adrian Jones’ Garthmyl herd at Welshpool.


4000gns top at Sedgemoor October sale


Trade at Greenslade Taylor Hunt’s October sale hit a high of 4000gns for Stowey Balisto Sky from M A Jeanes Farms. She was part of the second consignment to disperse the young stock from the Stowey herd. This 14-month old heifer has a brother at Cogent and is from the UFM Dubs Eroy family and joins the Perrins herd in Cornwall. The sale of collective milkers peaked at 3200gns for Terry Cox’s Red and White class winner Holmead Frontrunner Roxy Red. Fresh with her first in September she is classified VG86 and sold to the Hawken family, Cornwall. Tim and Mandy Reed’s retirement sale generated an excellent trade for their milking cows with a joint top price of 2300gns for the VG85 second calver Culberhayes Dictator Molly and the second calved Culberhayes Jordan Odyssey VG86. A youngstock consignment from Bridgwater College’s Somerset herd created considerable interest and sold to 1250gns for Somerset Saratoga Romkje due next spring.


Collective sale averages: cows in milk £1638, heifers in milk £1724, bulls £1192. Stowey dispersal average: 38 served heifers £1203, 43 bulling and maiden heifers £1137. Culverhayes averages: 46 dairy cows including A lots £1997, 10 bulling heifers £905, 10 yearling heifers £798.


Somerset herd averages: 37 served heifers £1079, 18 maiden heifers £674. (Greenslade Taylor Hunt)


Stainbank leads Craven Dairy trade


On Monday 12th October Robin Jennings’ second prize heifer Stainbank Sunray 423, an Abbeyhouse Offside daughter, led the trade at Skipton, selling for £1850.
