Name: Ryan Renfree Age: 20

PROFILE

How long have you been in HYB? I have been a member of HYB ever since I can remember and have always tried to attend and participate in as many events as possible.

What have your highlights been? The main highlight for me was at the Cornwall Club’s evening show last year where we had junior champion with Hayvalley Mccutchen Bailey and reserve junior champion with Dubthorne Colt Barbie Red.

This was a huge achievement as we only started showing in the previous year. Competing in handling classes at the All Breeds All Britain Calf Show was also a great experience and really improved my confidence in the show ring.

What is your favourite event in the HYB calendar? One of my favourite events is the weekend rally, it is a great chance for everyone to go out and enjoy themselves. It also gets all age groups involved which is nice to see at competitions. A local event that I also really enjoy is the Cornwall calf show, it is excellent to see everyone’s young heifers out getting some show experience.

What do you think you’ve gained from HYB? HYB has made me far more confident at showing and show preparation with our cattle. Going to national events such as the All Britain Calf Show and the weekend rally has given me a chance to see some of the best showmanship and Holstein cattle in the UK, which has been a real benefit to me.

What other hobbies do you have? I enjoy playing football, but haven’t had much time to do this recently because of studying and working on the farm.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years? In 10 years I see myself helping to manage the family farm with my main goal continuing to improve the quality of Holstein genetics that we have on the farm. Myself and my fiancée Rachel would also consider tendering for a farm in the future.

What would you say to someone to encourage them to take part in HYB? I would say just join up and give it a go. Even if you haven’t had much experience around animals it is easy to get into and more experienced members are always keen to give a helping hand.

Clubs are always looking for new members to join up, so just find out who the local club leader is and get in touch with them. Joining HYB is a great chance to gain experience around animals as well as boosting confidence and meeting lots of great people in doing so.

What would you like to see new added to the HYB programme?

I would love to see a few more events going on over the winter months. This could be activity days or training days, so that we can get some extra preparation before the upcoming show season.
