WORMANBY WIN 2015 PREMIER HERD COMPETITION
Hodgson’s Wormanby herd from Burgh by Sands, Carlisle. Tasked with the unenviable job of judging the Premier Herd Competition this year were 2014 winners Eifion and Wyn Jones. “It has been an honour and a privilege to judge this year’s Premier Herd Competition,” commented Wyn. “When judging our main criteria was to find an even and balanced herd of cows that had strength and depth, cows that had capacious

mammary systems and great locomotion.
“All seven finalists had tremendous cows and were all worthy winners of their respective regions. Every herd we saw was of an exceptional quality, it was an absolute pleasure to see such a high standard of Holsteins across the country. We saw numerous cows that had done 100 tonnes and above demonstrating that the breed has longevity in abundance.
“The winning herd had great
mature and intermediate cows, but it was the heifers that gave them the advantage over the other herds. They will be real cow makers.
“My father and I would like to thank Holstein UK for the opportunity to judge one of the most prestigious awards in British dairying. We would also like to thank the families for their hospitality during our tour of the UK. We look forward to the Premier Herd Open Day in 2016.”

In recent years the herd has gained recognition through the Gold Cup and also National Shows, but David admits it has been a great honour to be recognised as the Premier Herd.
Having previously been awarded a Master Breeder Award the Wormanby herd was also runner up in the RABDF Gold Cup in 2012 and 2013.
Most recently David has taken the step to showing at National level with noted success at both UK Dairy Expo and UK Dairy Day including top three placings, resulting in three All Britain nominations in 2014.
Each year new families are purchased through maiden heifers at the Black and White Sale or embryos and David aims to establish them in his own herd before selling for a return.
Fresh young cows and heifers are regularly sold at Carlisle through the Border and Lakeland Club Sales as a second income to the milk cheque.
