‘AT THE HEART’ OF CIS Suzanne Harding, product services executive for CIS enlightens

us on what is happening at the moment. A

nother year has drawn to an end and it is good to know that CIS moves from strength to strength. While keeping our prices static, CIS is milk recording more animals, performing more health tests and increasing our service portfolio. In the past year CIS has processed more than 3.4m individual milk tests and nearly 720,000 individual health tests. CIS average turnaround time remains under 24 hours for milk tests and usually a week for health testing.

The CIS processing team, based at Scotsbridge House, Rickmansworth, is busy handling the increased numbers of health test results from samples going through the unique state of the art CIS Speir House Laboratory, Telford, Shropshire. We have, therefore, prioritised stream lining the health testing IT systems to free up processing time, giving the team more time to answer farmer’s queries and investigate problems, ensuring that CIS data continues to be accurate and timely.

A milk sample is full of data about the cow. It can be used to test for SCC, milk components, health testing and for pregnancy testing. So much information in just one sample. Health testing is available for the four main diseases in the UK; BVD, Leptospirosis, IBR and Johnes, as well as neospora. Milk is analysed for somatic cell counts and milk components including urea and fatty acids at no extra cost to our customers.

After much preparation, CIS has launched a CHeCS (Cattle Health Certification Standards) Johnes Monitoring service. This new service builds upon our Quarterly Whole Herd Johnes Health testing. Customers of CIS on Quarterly Johnes Whole Herd testing have had a free three month trial, with the expectation that many will find the new add-on useful to their business. Dan Humphries, of Lambert, Leonard and May vet practice, will be monitoring the testing, advising at the herd and individual cow level.

the animal screen. The long awaited Android version is still in the planning stage. The award winning ‘Your Herd’ web based management tool is used by nearly 80% of CIS customers. Two thirds of farmers use it to dry off and calve cows and at the same time they can register the calf in a herd book, apply for a passport and add medical treatments for cow and calf. A real one stop shop. Other areas that are popular are the online medicine book, health reporting and Day2Day action lists. More than 15% of our customers view CIS reports online saving money on their milk recordings. Future plans for CIS include developing a management tool to report fatty acid component content. We also continue to improve the efficiency of our systems and procedures to keep costs to our customers as low as possible.

CIS continues to value feedback and suggestions from our customers, building upon the excellent relationships fostered by our regional and area managers.
