DERBYSHIRE HOLSTEIN CLUB

DERBYSHIRE HOLSTEIN CLUB REPORT

he Derbyshire Club has had another successful and well supported summer. A coach party of more than 40 people visited three fine herds in Cheshire – Woodhey (Messrs Robinson), Lachstone (Mr and Mrs J Platt) and Riverdane Holsteins (Mark and Sue Nutsford), a day which included a great lunch at the Badger Inn, Church Minshull. Our annual calf show takes place at the Bakewell Showground at the end of the first day of the show each August. We are indebted to Messrs Bagshaw for allowing us to use this excellent facility, which draws an attentive audience. In July, we invited Craig Brough of Carrock Holsteins to judge our Summer Herd competition. The eleven entries showed off some really fine Derbyshire cows. The ‘Best all-round Herd’ of the year was, once again, the ‘Meldamar Herd’ of Messrs Shepherd and Sons. Not to be upstaged, the ‘Best Herd on Inspection only’ was the long-established ‘Alsopdale Herd’ of Andrew and Joanna Bunting – the judge’s comment was that this herd showed great consistency right through cows of all lactations. First winner of the new ‘Andrew and Edith Dutton Perpetual Trophy’ was the Shepherd family with Meldamar Baltimor Flora 19, who gave a whopping 1219 kg of fat and protein in her latest completed lactation.

T

Craig returned to Derbyshire to summarise the summer competition in an excellent way at our annual dinner and presentation of awards at

the end of October. Also in attendance at the dinner was a table of our enthusiastic young breeders, just back from the ABAB Calf Show, where the team effort gained them second in Tidy Lines and first for Best overall Show Stan’. This was an excellent swansong for Sue Stubbs, ending her tenure as HYB Co-ordinator on a high.
