SURVIVING THE DOWNTURN

Mary Mead’s views on the current issues faced by the dairy industry.

I

n today’s chaotic market one can sympathise with some producers’ desire to return to the old Milk Marketing Board days, but we shouldn’t forget the processors’ astuteness when arguing their cost of production and the fact that, in many years, milk price was also challengingly low. The processors, which also included Dairy Crest (MMB), were in competition, not only with each other, but had to compete with imports. Most milk was produced from grass-based systems and, in times of low milk price, the income from British Friesian male calves played an essential part in supporting profitability. The advent of BSE sadly knocked this additional income on the head.

Subsequently, the period of higher milk prices under Milk Marque supported higher-cost systems of milk production. As many farmers are now experiencing a massive cost price squeeze, the British Friesian male calf can once again make the crucial difference between profit and loss. With cereal prices so low, the options are open for quality calves on either barley beef or grass based systems.
