LYDIA IS LITTLE STAR AWARD

WINNER FOR 2015 The 2015 winner of the Littlestar Award was announced during the All Britain All Breeds Calf Show with the winner being enthusiastic Holstein Young Breeder Lydia Griffiths.

ydia, 17, from the Yorkshire Club, impressed the interview panel of Holstein UK President Randolph Miller, Michael Dennison from Semex, CIS chairman Aled Jones and non-executive director of HYB Edward Griffiths, with her knowledge and passion for the breed to win the award. Hailing from the 180-head Coachgate Holstein herd which is run on the edge of the Pennines, Lydia helps out at weekends carrying out relief milking and feeding tasks. “I enjoy being involved on the farm and working with the cows. My favourite cows are ones that don’t get their number written on the parlour board!” An enthusiastic member of

L

Yorkshire HYB, Lydia attended her first Weekend Rally at Beeston Market several years ago. She was part of the washing team and remembers being thankful that the other member was tall, as Lydia

could barely pick up the bucket or reach the top of the calf. Since then she has travelled the length of the country competing in judging, washing, showmanship and photography. The highlight of Lydia’s HYB calendar is the Weekend Rally, as she enjoys all of the different activities and meeting new people along the way. Lydia has enjoyed success at

the Yorkshire All Breeds Calf Show and Great Yorkshire Show over the years and in 2013 was champion showman at the Yorkshire HYB Calf Show and in 2015 she won her showmanship class, as well as clinching the champion calf honours. As well as HYB, she is an active and dedicated member of Cawthorne Young Farmers which she admits is a big part of her life. She currently holds the position of treasurer, which, in her first year she found challenging, but is hoping to be more prepared this year.

Her achievements in Young Farmers include qualifying for National finals in public speaking, stock judging and floral art, as well as pantomime, where she was awarded best actress at Northern Area. Lydia won a place on the Tall Ships Youth Voyage in 2014, which required her to do a lot of fund raising. “This was one of the best weeks of my life meeting new people, as well as learning new skills, while enjoying the sun and sea.” Beyond HYB and Young Farmers Lydia has many other hobbies. She has achieved grade five clarinet and piano and is currently working towards grade six and theory on piano. She also completed a Junior Sports Leadership Award which allowed her to run sports clubs in her previous school. Currently in her final year of

A Levels, Lydia is studying maths, business and art and is applying to join an accountancy firm with the hope specialising in farm accounts.

Runners up for the Littlerstar

Award were Evie Tomlinson, East Midlands and Daniel Weaver, Staffordshire.
