4) We remain privately owned. We are not listed on a stock market and so we are not under the immense pressures that the big listed advisers are – to produce ever better quarterly results, to deliver ever better shareholder returns. We are able to plan for the medium and long term; investing in staff or IT or whatever else the business might need without requiring an instant payoff. We are financially secure and our balance sheet is strong.
5) Investment expertise. We make extensive use of our relationships with academics. Our portfolios are designed using Modern Portfolio Theory, and we use science to build our portfolios. We reject two of the most common claims – that an individual or firm can select the right stocks in which to invest and that an individual or firm can select which markets are over or under valued. These two premises are usually dressed up with other reassuring jargon – ‘a hub and spoke approach with a tactical asset allocation’ for instance. Sadly there is almost no evidence that anyone can bring off this fabulous trick but there is a huge weight of academic evidence that using such an approach is likely to produce a disappointing investment result. The value of your investment could go down as well as up so you could get back less than you invested.
6) We are independent. We are genuinely independent. We have no institutional shareholders, we receive no commissions from any suppliers. We can, and do, switch between suppliers to give our clients the best chance of achieving their investment goals.
7) We own every investment we recommend to
clients. The directors’ own portfolios own the same assets that we recommend to investors.
8) We do not take ourselves too seriously. We are amongst the leading firms in our specialist areas, but we know we do not know it all. We are all learning perpetually and are engaged in continuing professional development to enhance our knowledge. We know that for our clients, their goals and values are more important than the money. To understand our clients’ goal and values we have to spend
time with them and get to know them very well. This means sharing in their triumphs and setbacks and having fun with our clients.
9) We are actively involved in research into and promotion of impact investment. It is no longer necessary to choose between investing for the optimal return and investing in businesses that behave as good citizens. It is becoming possible to serve both goals concurrently.
So here is a typical client scenario
Husband and wife, husband is a US citizen, wife is a UK citizen born in Ireland. Three children. The husband has enjoyed a successful career that has left him with pension rights in the US, the UK and and an international pension plan. They have ISAs, investments and a holiday property in France. They approached us because they were seeking a way to bring together all their investments and plans into a coherent professional structure. They were concerned about their US tax returns, their UK tax returns, their estate’s prospective inheritance tax liability and the CGT consequences of the husband’s restricted share options. After discussion it transpired that the key goals were
1) To live comfortably
2) To work out how to pass money to the children without spoiling them
3) To stop worrying about money
After 18 months working with financial planners and tax personnel at Satis, their tax affairs were in good order, their wills were re-written, tax efficient trust funds were established for the children, total investment fees were nearly halved and the clients were relieved to understand that for them, work was already optional – they had enough money.
