Letter from the Publisher
With just one year to go before we reach the iconic year 2020, this magazine might need to start thinking of a new name. The current title we thought up many years ago was meant to display the clear vision (2020) we had when looking into aspects of Jersey’s future. Since then we have delved into a whole host of subjects, ranging from education and charity to health and sports, and we add a few more in this edition. It doesn’t get any easier trying to answer the question ‘What will Jersey be like in 2020?’ but we will be getting the answer soon in any case.
It’s not Jersey’s fault that the future remains uncertain. Life becomes increasingly complicated even with the help of constant improvements in knowledge and technology. There are many events and trends that are simply too difficult to foresee, such as the eruption of a volcano, the election of an American president or even the UK’s decision to leave the EU. So there are many uncertainties despite of, or perhaps because of, the efforts of well-meaning human beings.
Nevertheless, we have to try to fathom out what the future holds if we are to make the best of the opportunities facing us, or to try to protect ourselves from the unknown. The more we plan, the fewer the chances there are that fate will work against us.
As far as Jersey’s future is concerned, we can face the prospect of 2020 with some confidence. Islanders are generally friendly, caring and hard-working people and are not likely to take too many unnecessary risks. The economy is also still pretty strong, despite a few challenges which will make for interesting times ahead. We even know a good deal about the risks and threats that might be facing us, and we have hard-working politicians and public servants trying their best to improve the lot of all Islanders and protect them from unnecessary risks. Look, for example, at the attempts reported on in this edition of 2020 to try to get youngsters more active so that they have a better chance of living a healthy, fulfilling life. In this and previous editions of 2020, we have identified many changes that need to be worked on and opportunities that need to be grasped; there are few problems facing the Island that are insurmountable.
All it needs is goodwill and effort to sustain the vision of Jersey as one of the best places on the planet in which to live now as well as in 2020 and beyond.
