Giving with a purpose

BY MICHAEL CLARKE Head of Private Clients, UBS Global Wealth Management Jersey

From Super League Triathlon to art exhibitions and Caring Cooks, UBS’s Community Affairs Programme is brimming with activity.

Michael discusses their unique approach and the importance of delivering sustained impact

To make a lasting impact in today’s world, it’s about more than giving - it’s about giving with purpose. At UBS, we’ve targeted our efforts to drive long-term sustainable change by supporting education and entrepreneurship in our local communities. We aim to achieve this through a strategic combination of funding and the commitment and skills of our people.

UBS has a long-standing, vigorous Community Affairs Programme that makes a sustained and measurable impact to support local projects.

As an organisation, we are always looking to the future so it’s no surprise that education is high on our agenda. Inadequate education can result in higher costs for society in terms of public spending, crime, health and economic growth. Therefore, the investment we make has an impact on both children and our wider society. We have been involved with an excellent charity in Jersey called ‘With Every Child our Future’ for almost

three years. Their ‘Reading

Volunteers’ project aims to increase child literacy and members of our team go into schools every week to help children with their reading. We’ve seen great participation from our employees who are fully engaged with the initiative. It is a core part of our mission to encourage employees to engage in the local community through hands-

We invest significantly in charitable and community events and one of the most exciting examples is our sponsorship of Super League Triathlon which came to Jersey for the first time in 2017. We are proud to be associated with an event that not only brings exceptional athletes to our shores, but also raises money for charity,

on and skills-based volunteering and this project is a great example.

It’s important to us that our initiatives have sustainable and long-term impact. One of the charities we work with, ‘Caring Cooks of Jersey’, achieves just that goal. Their mission is to empower children and young people to the point that they are able to grow, cook and eat healthy food in childhood and beyond by educating, inspiring and supporting them and their families. We have invested time and funds in their pioneering food education programme called ‘Let’s Get Cooking’ that aims to help more primary school children eat well for life. Investing in education and promoting healthy living is really important to our team at UBS. It’s hugely rewarding to see children embracing the importance of healthy eating and learning to cook from scratch, not only for their physical development but also to help fuel their learning ability.

brings the community together to celebrate sporting activity and promotes the Island where we live and work. Members of our staff entered the Super League Triathlon Age Group races last year and a number also took part in the 'Race For The Kids'.

On a slightly smaller scale, but no less important, our staff chose for us to be a sponsor for the Dandara Colour Run which raised more than £17,000 for Family Nursing & Home Care last year. A total of 971 people took part in the event which saw participants being showered with coloured paint as they made their way along a five-kilometre stretch of beach in St Aubin’s Bay. The money raised will help children with life- threatening and life-limiting conditions on the Island.

A number of our client events also have a social, environmental or charitable purpose. Most years we take clients to see Diva Opera as part of the Domaine des Vaux Opera Festival. The evening raises funds for Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust and the Lady Taverners. Additionally, for a number of years we have supported the ‘Night at the Oscars’ charity concert at Jersey Opera House in aid of the Oscar Maclean Foundation. Other support for the arts includes sponsorship of the Liberation Music Festival which brings
