These have included a variety of sporting pursuits and charity events on their behalf by holding cake sales and in-house raffles. Over the past three years over £60k has been set aside on their behalf, each benefitting from the monies raised.
In 2019 four new local charities have been selected by Ports of Jersey staff to receive similar financial support from the company. They have been confirmed as Alzheimer's Jersey, Caring Cooks, Beresford Street Kitchen and Healing Waves. A series of fund-raising activities are planned over 12 months that will financially benefit each of them. The enthusiasm shown by staff in taking part in these activities is never-ending and Ports of Jersey encourages them to fundraise in many different ways with any money raised equally matched by the company.
Alongside its own fund-raising activities for dedicated charities, Ports of Jersey supports and facilitates a number of community initiatives, in particular ones that involve the Island's young people. These have included 'behind the scenes' visits for primary and secondary school students to its Airport Fire Service, air-traffic control tower and Harbour operations facility at Maritime House. As part of its annual 'Safety at Sea' Campaign, officers from Jersey Coastguard regularly reach out to local schools to educate and inform about water safety and how to act appropriately in the water and around the coastline. In mid-September 2017 Ports of Jersey started working with local charity 'Pathways Jersey', a non-profit organisation set up as a means of encouraging, equipping and empowering children and young islanders to recognise their potential and self-worth. This is achieved by offering them a range of opportunities to engage and inspire as well as build character and self-confidence through gaining experience and life skills. One of the initiatives undertaken in late 2018 was a TV 'Apprentice' style challenge where a group of youngsters from the charity were split into two teams and were tasked with creating and selling a product from scratch to festive shoppers with the winning team being the one that not only made the most money from the initial investment but were judged on their skills displayed during the seven-week initiative.
Ports of Jersey supports many clubs, associations and societies, related to maritime and aviation activities. The goal is to enhance these relationships, allowing the organisation to support the community and enable an affordable and accessible way into the aviation and maritime industries. This support can take many forms, such as reduced property rentals, free use of Ports facilities or property, the use of Ports of Jersey assets to support events or providing direct support to the many fund-raising activities that these groups stage through the year.
Ports of Jersey is committed to being a responsible business making a positive difference. It continues to look at ways in which to grow its corporate social responsibility programme with new ventures and working with other local businesses. With the help of its employees it will continue to work with local charities and aspire to build lasting relationships within the Island community.
Other charities, associations and events that have benefitted from the company's support include Jersey Aero Club's Helping Wings initiative, BBC Children in Need, Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal, British Red Cross, International Air Display, Jersey Battle of Flowers, Jersey Marathon, Jersey Hospice Care Dragon Boat racing and UBS Sailing Regatta.
