undertook one of the largest programmes of work the States of Jersey had ever done, conducted an extensive stakeholder engagement programme and ultimately securing the future of these nationally important gateways to our Island.

• Incorporation alone was not the solution to being able to fund the considerable capital investment programme required to keep the ports open, safe and secure. But, it did enable a more progressive and commercial approach to our business. The benefits of the commercialisation of Ports of Jersey can be seen in advancing key investments in the Island, including the new restaurant at Elizabeth Terminal, new corporate aviation hangars at the Airport – and of course the essential investment in the Airport Integrated Terminal.

• Working closely with Visit Jersey, Ports of Jersey has also achieved strong growth in our passengers through the Airport – hitting the highest volumes since the year 2000, and we are currently in the longest period of sustained growth since the late 1960s / early 1970s.

• •

• We are fast becoming a reputable supplier of marine services and have grown our revenues through lucrative contracts throughout the UK and French coasts.

• Finally, we are on track to becoming the first Airport in the British Isles to have an operationally certified Remote/ Digital Air Traffic Control Tower, using leading edge technology that will transform Air Traffic Services around the world.

There are areas in which I wish we could have delivered more swiftly, such as the Elizabeth Terminal Restaurant as well as reaching a more secure position on our regulated prices with our Economic Regulator. With these, however, we learnt, adapted and moved forward.

Most importantly, we have made huge progress in developing our people who work at Ports of Jersey. I have been very impressed with the progress we have made to a point where we have a genuine devoted interest in becoming operationally excellent and delivering improvements for our customers. Our people are quickly becoming adept at continuously improving the way we work and are thriving on change.

Given the high international regulatory standards in safety and security that we must adhere to and the nature of our business activities where people come in close proximity to large moving equipment, we have naturally had a focus on keeping people safe. Sometimes this dominates our thinking and reaction to issues.

I accept that we don’t always get things right, as a few critics point out from time to time, but we are trying very hard to ensure residents, visitors and port users receive the best service that we can afford to provide. We have been open and transparent in our operations and communications, where anyone in the Island can ask a question of us by our ask@ports.je email address and expect to get a reply. When we make a mistake, we own up and learn from it.

In addition to keeping the Island connected by the work we do in core operations, we also get deeply involved in the community. From educating youth in sea and aviation safety, to supporting local initiatives, helping charities and putting on large community events such as the Jersey Boat Show and Air Display – we’re attempting to do our bit to keep Jersey a wonderful place to live. Over the past year we have been deeply involved with Pathways Jersey, a local children’s charity, and have worked closely with the youngsters to create opportunities for them to get involved in our business. It has been hugely rewarding for us.

My family and I have truly enjoyed our time in Jersey, and we have met so many wonderful people. It is with considerable disappointment that we are leaving, but I will continue to watch Jersey’s continued success from afar. I wish all of you the very best for the future.
