Clear, open, honest Minster Cleaning’s approach to ethical franchising

E

stablished in 1982 and franchising since 1992, Minster Cleaning has built its business around its

commitment to ethical franchising. The European Code of Ethics for

Franchising (“the Code”) was developed by the European Franchise Federation. The British Franchise Association (BFA) adopted the Extension and Interpretation which follows the Code and produced The Code of Ethics for Franchising. Franchising is unique in its model – it

is a partnership between the franchisor and the franchisee. Franchisees are investing their time, money and future into the franchisor’s business model. It is only right that they should expect support from their franchisor, along with communication about the risks and fairness in the treatment of franchisees. Minster Cleaning provides a ‘Disclosure

and Information Document’ to all prospective franchisees. This is a clear, open and transparent communication which details the current board members and senior leadership team, business proposition, financial position, branch closures, financial projections (documents for which are supplied by the finance team after the partnership has been agreed) and suggested due diligence for the purchaser (the incoming franchisee). Importantly, Minster Cleaning also

appends a full list of all franchisees to the Disclosure and Information Document. This includes contact details along with the year the franchise started and the year the current franchisee started with Minster Cleaning. The prospective franchisee is encouraged to call any of the current franchisees on the list, and suggested to contact around five. This openness around their business and their model is appreciated and is put in place every time a franchise is sold (whether it is a resale or a new greenfield set up). The prospective franchisee can ask anything about the franchise, including the business model, return on investment, support received from the franchisor etc.

“Our approach to prospective fnhisees is hat sets us aart

Minster Cleaning also put in place

comprehensive training before the incoming franchisee’s first day in the business, and unlimited support after that in the four main areas of marketing, operations, IT and systems, and finance. The Managing Director and heads of department regularly meet with branches and are at the end of the phone for support, advice and reassurance. Dan Williams, Managing Director of

Minster Cleaning says: “Our clear, open and honest approach to prospective franchisees is what sets us apart. People appreciate the straightforward nature of the information we provide to them and the opportunity to ask questions of the franchisees ‘on the ground’ who work in the business every day.” Minster Cleaning ensures that the

prospective franchisee is fully aware of any risks and challenges that face their network. They make sure that they understand the fees payable to the franchisor and always make sure that the prospective franchisee is using a BFA-

accredited solicitor for the purchase. This open and clear communication

obviously works for Minster Cleaning. The average length of partnership with their franchisees is 15 years, with some franchisees having been with the franchise for more than 30 years. Long and mutually beneficial relationships are testament to Minster’s robust business model. Minster Cleaning currently has

more than 40 management franchises nationwide, with turnover over £60million. New franchise opportunities include Buckinghamshire, Doncaster, Guildford, Leicestershire, London and Peterborough. There is a current resale opportunity in Glasgow. Initial startup cost is £20,000 plus vat, which covers a £5,000 marketing launch fund, along with licence fee, training, IT equipment and stationery. In addition, you will need £35,000 working capital (plus personal drawings). 
