A D A Y I N T H E L I F E A Local Day Jo Lock, genera l manager, NIC Local

From fra nchisee to genera l manager, Jo Lock has spent almost two decades living every stage of the fra nchisee journey. Today, she's using that experience to help others build successful businesses of their own.

For many franchise support professionals, advice comes from training manuals. For Jo Lock, it comes from experience. Having joined NIC Local 19 years ago as a franchisee herself, she understands exactly what it's like to build a business from the ground up. After successfully growing and later selling her own franchise, she moved into the support offi ce, progressing through the ranks from business development manager to general manager. That journey shapes every conversation she has

today. "I've been in our franchisees' shoes. I know the excitement, the pressure and the decisions they face because I've lived it myself." Jo’s day begins with planning, emails and discussions with the wider support team before attention quickly turns to the people at the heart of the business, the franchisees.

"I've been in our franchisees' shoes ... the decisions they face – I've lived it myself"

Some need strategic advice on growing turnover.

Others want guidance around staffi ng, profi tability or operational challenges. Whatever the topic, Jo's role is less about giving answers and more about helping business owners fi nd the right path. "It's about listening fi rst," she explains. "Every franchisee's business is different, so the support has to refl ect that." One of Jo's favourite parts of the role is meeting

prospective franchisees during Discovery Days and delivering specifi c parts of NIC Local's induction programme. For Jo, these early meetings are about more than explaining systems and processes. They're about building trust that will continue long after training has fi nished." The relationships you build at the very beginning often become the strongest ones throughout a franchisee's journey." Business reviews are never simply about numbers.

Conversations regularly cover sales growth, compliance, staff recruitment, profi tability and future ambitions. With years of operational experience behind her, Jo can offer practical solutions that can be implemented immediately rather than simply theoretical advice. Whether she's helping prepare for a major tender,

reviewing fi nancial performance or supporting Business Development Managers, her focus remains fi rmly on helping franchisees achieve sustainable growth. One of the aspects Jo enjoys most is the variety.

One week might involve supporting franchise exhibitions or contributing to strategic planning. Another could see her helping franchisees prepare for signifi cant contract opportunities via tenders or supporting the continued development of the wider network. "It's impossible to predict exactly what each day will bring. That's one of the reasons I've stayed with NIC for so long." Ask Jo what she enjoys most, and the answer

comes without hesitation. "Helping people build businesses that genuinely change their lives is incredibly rewarding. Every success story feels personal because I understand the journey they've been on." After almost 20 years with NIC Local,

Jo’s enthusiasm remains as strong as ever.  niclocal.com
