Journey to success

ONE YEAR ON…

Max Read is managing director of Visiting Angels o  Lonon

What prompted you to pursue a franchise? My goal was to de-risk the process of starting a business. With franchising, you take a proven business model and apply it in a new geography. Visiting Angels has been the largest provider of home care in the US for 25 years, which was an additional vote of confi dence. The fact that the brand had been successful in the US and the UK, and was operating a tried-and-tested model, gave me the confi dence to invest.

How long did it take to get up and running? Care is a highly regulated sector, so there are certain steps you have to take, including registering with the CQC and hiring someone with care sector expertise to manage the operational side. But overall, setup was straightforward. In terms of funding, we found raising the relatively small amount of capital required easy enough, and banks were keen to lend given how often they see franchise care businesses succeed.

What was your fi rst day, and your fi rst month, of trading like? Unlike opening a restaurant or a coffee shop, you don't have a physical location and you're not relying on footfall to drive sales on day one. That means the fi rst days and months of trading can be quite slow while you build your brand locally. We were fortunate to start growing our client base from almost day one, which was a great result from a cashfl ow perspective. Generally speaking though, the early days of a home care business are all about networking, building your brand and putting your referral partners in place locally.

What advice do you have for others? Follow the manual, leverage the experience of your franchise network, and trust the process even when it feels slow to get going.

What's been the highlight of the last 12 months? Defi nitely the growth we've achieved, both in monthly revenue and in team size. Watching the business go from a standing start to a proper operation with a brilliant group of people behind it has been genuinely rewarding.

What are your plans for the next year? Our focus for the rest of 2026 and beyond is to keep building our brand within the local community. That means building relationships with local healthcare professionals, providing valuable expertise where it's helpful, and supporting more older adults to live independently at home. 
