Veronica and her partner Steve Jones recognised franchise ownership as an opportunity to capitalise on that experience, to build their own business while continuing to make a meaningful impact

Building a care business with purpose Veronica’s career in care led her to a Registered Manager role at Right at Home Ilkley, where she spent three years supporting the business through its early years. Through that experience, she saw an opportunity to take on the Harrogate territory. “We knew we wanted to own our own business,” her partner Steve explains. “We knew care was a good sector to be in and that Right at Home's values aligned with our own.”

“A brand whose values aligned with our own”

Support when it matters For Veronica and Steve, franchising offered more than a recognised brand. It provided guidance in a highly regulated sector. “It’s a business, but you’re dealing with people’s lives. There’s care regulation, compliance, and real responsibility,” says Veronica. Steve adds: “In care, if something goes wrong, you need that support network to be solid.” That support was invaluable during the CQC registration process, when an administrative issue threatened to delay progress. “The Compliance team got onto it straight away,” Veronica says. “They emailed the right people and helped move things forward.”

Standing out in a competitive market Building their brand locally was critical in the early days. “Marketing is key,” Veronica says. “How do you get clients and staff when you have no history yet? You need that presence – both online and offline.” Operating in the highly competitive Harrogate

territory, they focused on community engagement and building a strong digital presence. “We live in an era where everything is digital,” Veronica explains. “People might meet you in the community, but they still go home and search.” The support of Right at Home’s marketing team

helped provide structure and direction. “Having regular meetings made a huge difference,” Steve says. “It wasn’t just about producing materials. It was about

understanding where to focus our energy and what would actually make an impact.”

The difference care makes Alongside business growth, the impact on clients remains their biggest motivation. Veronica recalls supporting a client living with dementia who had been reluctant to accept care. “After the visit, he got dressed and he was ready to come with me,” she says. “We went out and had a hot chocolate together. We laughed, watched people go by, and when we got back, he gave me a hug and said thank you.” For Veronica and Steve, moments like these reinforce

why they chose care. “This isn’t something you can do on minimal effort,” Veronica says. “Especially in the early stages, you need to be fully invested. It’s demanding work. It’s emotional work. And it’s rewarding work.” For Veronica and Steve, it is also an opportunity to achieve their life goals.
