After the rain I

n any other December- January issue, this column would traditionally look ahead at the year to come with a glimpse at the one just

gone. The events of 2020 have been so extraordinary, that’s it’s almost impossible to sum it up in a few paragraphs. Plus I’m understandably reluctant to make too many predictions about the next 12 months! What I will say – as I have

before – is that no matter what happens, the world keeps turning. Nick Williams echoes the sentiment on page 34, advising that potential franchisees and franchisors remain focussed on the bigger

picture and urges us all to remember that economic troughs and peaks come and go – and always will. So there’s no reason not to make plans. The pandemic has brought

into sharp focus a few things that many of us knew already. Firstly, that women’s share of work and domestic obligations has long been unbalanced. More and more women are taking back control of how they juggle career and family/leisure time by becoming their own bosses with a franchise. Case studies abound in the report on pages 24-33. Secondly, preserving good

mental and physical health and wellbeing has never been

more important. Business owners are mixing enterprise with the feelgood factor and running franchises that benefit both themselves and their communities – find out how on page 38. There’s a rainbow at the top of this page in recognition of how, this year, the multicoloured symbol came to represent hope, gratitude and solidarity expressed towards key and essential workers. It’s also a fitting emblem to carry into the coming year – because while there may be some rain, there will also be rainbows. Good luck with your franchise journey! 
