Women in franchising

“I have the freedom to run my own business the way I want to, but I also have the security and reassurance of the franchise team to support me”

How has life changed since you launched your franchise? The work-life balance changes dramatically when you are running your own business, so I think it is important to create a distinction between home life and work life. I turn off my phone and emails in the evenings and at the weekend otherwise it can take over a lot of free time. However, the pros hugely outweigh any cons and as long as I have my phone with me, and access to the internet, I can work from anywhere.

How have you found being a woman running her own business? I love it! I love the freedom it gives me to spend time with my elderly mother (when we and her care home are not in lockdown). I can catch up on admin at times to suit me – such as the evenings and weekends – to free up time during the week for other commitments.

What qualities do you need to be a successful franchisee? The system we are provided with as part of Homeclean takes away much of the need to be organised in the day-to-day running of the business. So as long as you follow the model it tells you who should be where, and when, and which clients need new cleaners and so on. Time management is important,

and I make myself available during working hours for any emergency that might arise, even if I’m not at my desk. Communication with both clients and cleaners is key, as is a desire to see jobs through and provide satisfaction to all clients.

What are your plans for the future? I have built up a loyal client base over the past few years so am keen to continue growing this.

Would you recommend franchising, and with Homeclean, to others? I would recommend franchising as a safer way of running your own business, certainly. It’s great to have the freedom, but to also have the security and reassurance of the franchise team to support me if needed. It’s also reassuring to buy into a trusted and well-known name. As women still tend to have the bulk of the childcare/household responsibilities, a business like Homeclean is very well suited to dovetail this work.

Any other advice for aspiring franchisees? Give it a go! It can be very rewarding and I love seeing how my cleaners and clients are in touch with each other several years after the cleaner was first placed with them.
