Rights When Buying Goods
Goods must be in conformity with the contract meaning they are: As described: they must match any description given by the seller. Fit for purpose: they must do what they are supposed to do. Of expected quality: they must be safe, durable and of the standard you would reasonably expect for that type of product. Rights apply for full price, in a sale, new or second-hand, once a good is bought from a trader.

Rights When Paying for a Service
A service must be carried out with: Proper skill and care. Completed in a reasonable time. Charged at a reasonable price if no price was agreed in advance.

Rights When Shopping Online
You have extra rights online including: 14-day cooling off period for distance contracts.
The right to clear information before you buy (seller’s details, full price). The right to delivery within 30 days.

Rights When Buying Digital Content and Services
Digital content and services must be: As described – An app described as a video editor must be able to edit videos. Fit for purpose – An online JC maths course must teach JC maths. Kept up to date – Software updates needed for it to work must be given.
Faulty good within 30 days -> full refund. 6 Redress
Faulty good after 30 days -> A repair or replacement or if that fails a refund or price reduction may be required.
There is no legal right to a refund for a change of mind unless the good was bought online or not in person (from a catalogue, on a doorstep).

Guarantee / Warranty
An extra promise of protection from the manufacturer or retailer given on top of a consumer’s legal rights.
A guarantee is usually free. A warranty is often sold as an add-on for extended cover.
