The Consumer Protection Act 2007 protects consumers from unfair and misleading trading practices. Under this Act it is illegal for a business to: ґ Make false or misleading claims about a product or its price. ґ Use aggressive selling tactics to pressure a consumer into buying something.
ґ Display prices to show large savings on items that were never actually for sale at a higher price.
Examples include: an influencer promoting a product without stating they are being paid to do so, or a shop advertising a Black Friday sale and telling consumers that the sale price is a big reduction even though it is being sold for the original price.
If you see false or misleading advertising, you can report it to the CCPC (Competition and Consumer Protection Commission) and the business can be prosecuted and fined.
