future volumes. research for writing this book
is prodigious. He presents not only as detailed a biography as possible of each model, but also fascinating lives of the full-size prototypes themselves, thus placing the models within a fuller historical context.
T e real heart of the work is Walker’s meticulous detailed analysis of the models. He examines their dimensions, construction particulars, and details of their equipment and rigging, and uses all this material almost to lay out a chronology of the development of major warships in the Royal Navy in the sailing era. He also assembles and presents the evidence for attributing particular identities to each of the models, in the manner of a detective.
T is reviewer, at least, was gratifi ed to notice a signifi cant improvement in Grant Walker’s writing style. Unlike, when reading Volume I, this reader found the author’s presentation far more absorbing and exciting, and enjoyed his evident enthusiasm for his subject. We can only hope this continues in
Along with Volume I, this second volume of Grant Walker’s study of the Rogers Collection is a monumental landmark in the landscape of dockyard model research. It cannot be recommended highly enough to any researcher or modeler with aspirations of understanding the Royal Navy’s warships in the sailing era.
