Scratch building a 1:48-scale Flower-class corvette on a Fleetscale hull: Part 4: Aſt details

We ended the last chapter with our Canadian-built short fo’c’s’le corvette, HMCS Chicoutimi, complete to the main deck. We can now construct the casing and build the funnel. T is was a second year’s work for me!


T e casing and galley T e casing encloses the engine and boiler rooms and includes the galley. British ships had the galley at the aſt end, but the Canadians shortened the casing by four frames (almost eight feet) to make room for the minesweeping winch, thus displacing the galley to the forward end over No. 1 boiler. I built this off the ship, using my profi le gauge one last time to take the sheer of the main deck, and scaling the


other dimensions off the Agassiz drawings. (Figure 62) As with previous decks, the fi ttings that would be installed later had their locations marked with pencil, then fi guregraphed and pilot drilled so this information would not be lost once the paint went on. Rivet lines were marked on the interior and the rivets were embossed using my Northwest Short Line ‘Riveter’ tool.


Several diff erences were noted between my Chicoutimi photographs and references, so I modifi ed my build to suit the actual ship. Chicoutimi’s engine room skylight had ten hatches where Sackville’s has eight, and one of the engine room vents diff ers from the cowl type shown on the plans. If you are modelling a particular corvette you need good photographs to be able to account for diff erences built into each ship by various yards at diff erent times during the war. Figure 63 shows the engine room hatch detail and the mushroom vent unique to Chicoutimi.
