T e lower deadeyes were stropped with iron wire in a simple jig. It consists of three sturdy brass rods set in a line in a block of scrap wood. Two soſt er iron pins secure a deadeye so its lower edge touches the middle brass pin. In use, a length of iron wire the desired diameter is cut and straightened, then bent in half into a tight ‘U’. With the deadeye out of the jig the loop of the wire is placed over the middle brass pin and bent out against the outer pins. T e deadeye is placed in the jig and the arms of the wire are bent tightly around the deadeye in the strop groove.

Spreading the arms slightly, the deadeye is removed and the wire is cut, leaving a small gap in the circle of the strop. T e deadeye is replaced and the strop is closed tightly and glued in place. (Figure 26)


T e deadeye straps were made from quite thick brass strips. A hole at the lower end fi tted a ½-inch nail which secured it fi rmly into the hull. T e upper end was ground narrow and was turned back on itself so it could hook onto the deadeye strop. (Figure 27)
