size and variable custom-shaped handle possibilities allow it to fi t nicely within the microscope’s depth of fi eld and total vertical working space available; most other cutting tools just do not fi t. A cutting tool
any bigger than a scalpel blade will not fi t under the bottom lens of the microscope and still be within both its depth of fi eld and the small fi xed vertical limitations of most (but not all ) of the manufacturers’ standard stands.
