5 SPOTLIGHT MANET-DEGAS AT ORSAY
Édouard Manet’s ‘Le Balcon’ from 1868/9
There were many points in common between Édouard Manet (1832- 1883) and Edgar Degas (1834-1917), not least their choice of subjects, such as horse-racing or cafés, as well as the collectors they attracted and their circle of friends. But there were just as many points of contention. A collaboration between Musée d’Orsay, Musée de l’Orangerie and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, brings to light the artists’ commonalities but most importantly focuses on the contrasts. They had different taste in literature and music. Sociable Manet sought recognition, while Degas refused to comply with the established way of obtaining acceptance. In the words of Paul Valéry, it was these ‘wonderful coexistences’ which bordered on dissonant chords that enriched their unique partnership. This major exhibition unites masterpieces never before brought together, inviting us to rediscover the work of these two giants in the framework of their short-lived complicity and enduring rivalry.
