PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT VA VA VIOGNIER!

For plenty of wine drinkers (though not so much in France), the New Year brings a month of alcohol abstinence, but why not simply try something new instead? In moderation, of course… A great option is a Viognier, perhaps best known as a Rhône grape but also being made to great acclaim by Laurent Miquel – whom the esteemed wine writer Tim Atkin has called “one of the key fi gures in the Languedoc wine revolution” – in Cessenon-sur-Orb, Hérault, Languedoc. On land which has been owned by the family since 1791, Laurent and his Irish wife Neasa (with a little help from their two bilingual children) also loves growing Syrah – his dad, Henri, was inspired by the great wines of the Rhône. It’s not easy to make good Viognier in such a hot and sunny part of France but Laurent has a number of techniques that he puts into place, such as night harvesting (Vendanges Nocturnes, left, with peach and apricot aromas and citrus notes – great with grilled fi sh) to preserve the freshness of the grapes, and plating north to south to stop direct midday sun scorching the vines.  Vendanges Nocturnes Viognier, Waitrose, £9.99.
