LOVE FRANCE ❘ JOIE DE VIVRE

ON ÉCOUTE MYLÈNE FARMER

Mystery and musical magic enthral the French

La Belle Mèche and illustrator Agathe Sorlet have combined their talents to create this lovely scented candle design – perfect as a Valentine’s Day gift

PROFILE YES SIR, I CAN BOUGIE

We do love a creative collaboration at France Today, so we are delighted to highlight a uniquely fragrant meeting of minds between home fragrance and candle makers La Belle Mèche and illustrator Agathe Sorlet. La Belle Mèche was created in 2013 by co-founders Laura and Pierre with a

mission to “create fragrances that smell gorgeous – and are simple, original and authentic too”. They also embrace a sound ecological ethos, using only products made in France, from the wax to the fragrances to the boxes (fully recyclable containers and – where there’s no other alternative – recycled plastic). The Plan Coeur scented candle offers a heady combined scent of blackcurrant, clove, rose, jasmine, wildfl ower, vanilla and caramel. The striking packaging and candleholder design by Agathe was commissioned especially for Valentine’s Day. “I like the idea of making the fl owers and the couples dance together,” she says. ● Plan Coeur Scented Candle, €39 from en.labellemeche.com

The iconic yet low profi le Quebec- born chanteuse Mylène Farmer is still enjoying smash hits and sellout tours

Certain French chanteuses retain a real air of mystery – presumably due to either shyness or a deliberately aloof approach – and keep a low public profi le, speaking up only rarely and purposely letting their music and accompanying visuals fascinate their eager fans. It’s hard to think of any singer who does this more effectively than Quebec (Canada) born singer- songwriter Mylène Farmer, who fi rst made her mark in the 1980s with epic, lyrically poetic songs and feature fi lm-esque videos. Despite largely

staying out of the public eye, she is the biggest female album shifter in French history. There is no sign of the 61-year-old’s appeal dwindling, either. The November release of her 12th album, L’Emprise, sold 72,000 copies in one week, including more than 65,500 physical sales, and it went straight to number one in the charts. It was her 10th chart-topper, the 16th if you include compilations and live LPs.

A summer tour follows, with stadium shows including Lille, Nantes, Stade de France, Paris, Marseille, Bordeaux and Nice. More than 550,000 tickets have already been sold, including 200,000 in one day. Catch her while you can…
