PRODUCT FOCUS TIGER’S EYE
Tiger’s-Eye is a polycrystalline variety of Quartz. It shows a variable chatoyant reflection as the stone is tilted, which is possibly due to the replacement of asbestos by Quartz, which retains the fibrous structure of the asbestos. The chatoyancy is the main identifying feature of Tiger’s-Eye, and it ranges from shades of yellow to a deep golden brown and blue.
ON THE BENCH
WORKING WITH TIGER’S EYE Tiger’s Eye is quite a durable stone, but care should always be taken when setting to avoid damage. After time, Tiger’s Eye may show wear and some possible surface abrasions, it is usually cut as a cabochon, which helps to protect the stone along with showing off it’s optical properties. Care should be taken when soldering and polishing, as heat can affect the colour of Tiger’s Eye.
