Viking Nautical Apprenticeship Program: a new career path to inland navigation
Viking, the world’s leading exploration company with over 25 years of experience sailing through European rivers, has partnered with the Swiss and German governments on the Viking Nautical Apprenticeship Program. Now in its third edition, the program aims to prepare young people for successful careers in the inland navigation sector.
By the end of the three-year journey in the Viking Nautical Apprenticeship Program, each apprentice will receive a Nautical Specialist qualification and aſter an ad- ditional six months of education they will become accredited as an Inland Shipping Captain, according to the new EU regulation.
Since knowledge of the rivers is cruci- al, most of the training—nine months per year—happens on board a Viking Longship®. The remainder of the training—three months each year—takes place at a nautical school in Duisburg, Germany where profes- sors provide theoretical knowledge.
Sailing is not enough to become a successful captain. Leadership, communication, risk assessment, safety management, environ- mental awareness and language knowledge are also key skills; therefore, the last year of the program focuses on developing these skills and competencies. The leadership pro- gram teaches trainees how to successfully motivate and manage the crew on board. Moreover, various workshops and onsite company visits enhance the program.
During the onboard practical training, each apprentice is surrounded by instruc- tors, coaches and experts always ready to help, support and share their knowledge. Additionally, each trainee is assigned a tu- tor outside of the onboard environment, who provides them with additional help and guidance.
The Viking Nautical Apprenticeship Program and the apprentices’ progress are also
closely monitored by the Swiss government to ensure the highest quality of education for the trainees. They also receive worldwi- de health insurance coverage during their apprenticeship. Job stability is very important, yet can be difficult for most young people to find. The Viking Nautical Apprenticeship Program of- fers successful apprentices Swiss employ- ment contracts. This ensures that they have a secure job and a competitive salary aſter they complete the program.
Being a part of Viking means meeting a lot of interesting people and a chance to make friends from all over the world. On a river cruise ship, our nautical teams are joined by 50 more colleagues from different countries in the hotel department—all working toge- ther to deliver our award-winning product to almost 200 guests per river voyage.
To take part in the Viking Nautical Apprenticeship Program and join our nau- tical team, trainees need to be at least 18 years old, have a high school diploma and speak German and English.
