Progression of Learning - Land Drill
Skill-Based: Physical movements of focus skill. Instructor description:
Boat on the grass, a dolley, or a carpet square. Sailors use sails to adjust the heading of the bow of the boat. Sailors use body weight to adjust the heading of the bow of the boat. Sailors use both together!
10-15 minutes
Activity-Based: Practice the water activities on land. Instructor description:
Run through rules for capture the flag with two “flags”/ floating items to capture.
Instructor demo.
Demonstrate that when you trim your sails and change your bodyweight in the boat, the boat changes direction toward or away from the wind.
Each student individually tries while instructor gives specific and constructive feedback.
Instructor demo.
Show how the “course” will be set up to capture the flag. Demonstrate boats sailing from one side to the other to capture the other team’s flag, then they return to their home territory.

Progression of Learning - Instructor Demonstration Instructor demo:
Instructor driving with student-volunteer crew will demonstrate off a dock where the rest of the class can observe. Demonstrate starting with the boat stopped in safety position. Next turn away from the wind using rudder, bodyweight and sail trim. Ten,turn back into the wind using rudder, bodyweight and sail trim. Exaggerate the movements while vocalizing!
Progression of Learning - Student Practice Rig and Sail out. On-Water Practice:
Pivoting Description:
Use 3 marks. Boats sail up to each mark and go head to wind, touching the bow onto the mark. Tey need to use their body weight and sails to move the boat from head to wind to sail to the next mark.
120 minutes On-Water Game: Capture the Flag Description:
Divide the boats into two teams and assign each team half the play area to defend. Te object is to enter the other team’s territory, capture the flag, and bring it back to the home territory without being caught.

SAFETY - Make sure you have another instructor or high-level student to co-teach with you if you are going to demo a skill away from your students safely. One person always needs to be with the class.
