EVALUATION IN SEASON AND POSTSEASON Once you know the skills and level of your students, you have the basis for individual evaluation during your classes. Here are some things to consider when you are “in season” and evaluating your students:


Are they performing what you asked? E If not, is it too complex? EWas the explanation or demonstration poor? EWere they not ready to move on or were they missing a skill set? E Are they frustrated or confused? E Are they having fun? E Do they challenge themselves? E Do they feel that they are achieving personal goals or at least getting closer? E Do you feel like they are making forward progress? E Do they like interacting with other sailors in the class?


If your students are not learning, you may see: E Embarrassment E Frustration (with self or instructor) E Stress E Alienation EWithdrawal


Work with sailors as individuals to help them achieve their personal best. Talk with your sailors, not at them. Actively listen to what they have to say to really comprehend the message. Don’t jump to conclusions and try to “fix the problem” before you have thoroughly explored what the issue is. Realistic goal setting can be a challenge for you as an instructor, but it will help you and your sailors have a high degree of success and satisfaction.


COMMUNICATION Communication


skills are essential elements of successful teaching. Every


action you take as an instructor requires you to communicate in one way or another. Good communication skills will only enhance your effectiveness as an instructor. Poor communication may adversely affect your ability to do your job teaching students new skills and taking them to a higher level of success. Poor communication might also lead to poor employer


reviews or even termination.


During your season, you will be presented with many situations that will require effective communication. The encounters will usually be one of the following: E Instructor and Sailor E Instructor and Supervisor E Instructor and Parent/Guardian/Adult E Instructor and Instructor/Assistant E Instructor and Officials E Instructor and Facilities Manager E Sailor to Sailor
