TEACHING INTERMEDIATE & ADVANCED SAILORS
Progression of Learning - Land Drill
Skill-Based: Physical movements of focus skill. Instructor description:
Using chalk on cement or rope on grass have students make a zig zag course upwind to a specific location. Adjust to make sure students are creating the shortest upwind course. Have students get in line behind Coach to walk along the path made. Have students stop periodically to discuss how they can avoid getting caught in irons while tacking.
Instructor demo.
Demonstrate making an upwind course (with either chalk or rope) to a specific destination. Make sure to discuss how to avoid getting caught in irons when taking multiple times.
Each student individually tries while instructor gives specific and constructive feedback.
Class tries while instructor gives feedback.

Activity-Based: Practice the water activities on land. Instructor description:
Using a paper plate with markers, students draw a zig-zag course to upwind on a windward/leeward course. Students should label the wind direction, marks on the windward leeward course, and each tack they would make to get around the course. Make sure you assign each student a number of tacks they must make. Have extra paper plates ready for redos!
Note: Sustainability option here, you can laminate circles of card stock and use dry-erase markers to re-use the paper plates.
Instructor demo.
Demonstrate how to create the paper plate course with an assigned number of tacks.

Progression of Learning - Instructor Demonstration Instructor demo:
Demonstrate sailing a close-hauled course to a close-hauled course using proper sail trim and body positioning. Complete three tacks in a row to demonstrate being able to keep your speed through the tack.

SAFETY - Make sure you have another instructor or high-level student to co-teach with you if you are going to demo a skill away from your students safely. One person always needs to be with the class.

Progression of Learning - Student Practice Rig and Sail out. On-Water Practice:
Assigned tacks Description:
Using a Windward/Leeward Course, assign each boat a specific number of tacks to be completed when sailing from the leeward to the windward mark.
Tip: Adjust the number of assigned tacks to the skill level of the sailors since more experienced sailors should do more tacks.

90 On-Water Game: Relay Race Description:
Divide the class into two groups/teams. Have one boat from each team sail around a medium-sized windward/leeward course by blowing a whistle to start the Relay Race. When a boat gets to the leeward mark, the next boat on the team can begin sailing upwind. Ten the Coach blows another whistle and calls out the sailors name, repeat until all members of the team have completed the course.
