Instructor Lesson Plan Focus Skill
Parts of the Sail & Control Lines Class Factors
Students: Number, Age, Skill Level, Boat-Type Time: Duration of class
Tree hours 5-10 mph
6 students, 9-12 years old, Intermediate, Optimist, single-handed Goal(s) What do you hope to accomplish?
Students will be able to identify different types of telltales, how to use them, and identify which control lines affect sail shape on specific parts of the sail on the Optimist.
Setup Chalk Talk: Weather: Air & Water Temp, Wind Speed, Forecast
• Whiteboard/Markers • Handout of Optimist sailboat without boat part names & pencils
Progression of Learning - Chalk Talk Purpose Value Statement: Explain why this focus skill will help connect to their sailing knowledge.
Tere are many parts of the sail and control lines on your Optimist. Knowing which control lines work to tighten or loosen the sail will help you sail your boat safely and efficiently in any wind condition.
Prior Skill Knowledge: What skills you need to know before learning about this new skill (brief review)
Review Beginner Sailing Skills, Intermediate Parts of the Boat. Artful Questions (1-2) to engage youth and help them connect to their prior experiences
Why would you want to make sure the sprit halyard is pulled up all the way? What can prevent it from being pulled on tight enough? Why might you want to change your sail shape? (Not your mainsheet!)
Content: Introduction:
Today we will be learning some new parts of the boat you have seen before, but maybe didn’t know their purpose - telltales! We will also be learning how control lines when pulled tight or let loose will change our sail’s shape to be more efficient.
Talking point with detail:
• Telltales - Identify 3 types of telltales (Masthead, Mainsail Luff, Mainsail Leech). • Change Sail Shape – Describe and demonstrate how the following sail control lines affect sail shape using a purchase system: Outhaul, Cunningham, Boom Vang and Halyard. • Effects – when you pull them tight versus make them loose.
Check for Understanding: Ask questions that probe for understanding.
Activity: Give each student clipboard, pencil, and handout of Optimist boat without boat part names; write a list of telltale types, parts of the sail, and sail control lines on the whiteboard; have student complete the handout on their own or in pairs; when completed bring the handout for review by instructor before moving to the next activity.
Question: Ask each student a question connecting which control line effects which part of the sail:
• Which control line will tighten or loosen the foot of the sail? outhaul • Which control line will tighten or loosen the luff of the sail? cunningham/boom preventer • Which control line will tighten or loosen the leech of the sail? Boom vang • Which control line will tighten or loosen the peak of the sail? sprit pole purchase system
Land Drill:
• Optimist sail • Pre-rigged Optimist
15 minutes
Materials needed to teach each step in the progression of learning, prep before students arrive.
