Jibing an Asymmetrical Spinnaker As with jibing a symmetrical spinnaker, coordination and timing between the skipper and crew, sail trim, and steering are important.

1 The crew switches the jib sheets and trims in the spinnaker sheet to help backwind the spinnaker through the jibe. The crew should also take up the new spinnaker sheet and begin to pull in the slack.

2 As the skipper jibes the boom across, the crew should release the old spinnaker sheet, and pull quickly on the new spinnaker sheet to bring the clew of the spinnaker around the jib and onto the other side.

3 Skipper and crew will shift their weight from the old windward side to the new windward side as the boom comes across, flattening the sailboat as it powers up on the new jibe.

4 After the spinnaker has jibed, the crew should ease the new spinnaker sheet as the sail fills, until it has a curl in the luff.

Note: Easing the sheet through the jibe will cause major twists in most asymmetrical spinnakers. The leech needs to be kept tight to prevent this, hence trimming the old sheet into the jibe.

Dousing an Asymmetrical Spinnaker: 1 The skipper steers downwind to a run to reduce the load on the sails and allow the crew to move into the middle of the sailboat. The crew can hand the spinnaker sheet to the skipper to keep flying the spinnaker and bring the foot close to the bow for retrieval.

2 The retrieval line is then pulled tight by the crew. The crew uncleats the spinnaker halyard and pulls spinnaker completely into the launcher tube or bag into the launcher with the retriever line. It is important to pull the sail in as quickly as possible or it may end up under the boat.

3 Once the spinnaker is completely in the launcher tube or bag, any slack in the spinnaker sheets should be taken up so they do not drag in the water.

4 Make sure the spinnaker pole has gone back inside the bow.
