TEACHING INTERMEDIATE & ADVANCED SAILORS

ccccc

Progression of Learning - Land Drill

Skill-Based: Physical movements of focus skill. Instructor description:

Tie boat in between two docks so it can’t touch the dock with rocking (without without mainsail) or use shallow water to stand in while instructor holds just bow(with or without mainsail. Set up one hiking bench or chair and a mock boom, mainsheet and tiller+extension to be used to practice the mainsail trim during flatten or rocking. Allow each student to practice rocking and flattening with proper body position, sail trim, and rudder placement. Review how much longer it will take to rock the boat on its rail versus how quickly it will take to flatten the boat.

Instructor demo.

Demonstrate proper body positioning, hand position, sail trim and rudder movements to quickly rock and flatter the boat.

Each student individually tries while instructor gives specific and constructive feedback.

Activity-Based: Practice the water activities on land. Instructor description:

Kinetics Race with Apparent Wind - Set up the mock windward/leeward course to be used for the On Water Game, two marks for starting area and one mark for windward mark; review the whistle sounds to be used to start the game; review the path to follow with a leſt turn at the windward mark. Students can use whatever method of propulsion to get around the course.

Instructor demo.

Demonstrate the course by blowing whistles and walk- ing a shorter version of the course slowly. Extend the course for a fun run race for students to practice while running or jogging.

Class tries while instructor gives feedback.

Progression of Learning - Instructor Demonstration Instructor demo:

Have students watch at the end of the pier while the Instructor demonstrates 3 quick flattens with time in between; and 3 continuous rocks with no time in between.

SAFETY - Make sure you have another instructor or high-level student to co-teach with you if you are going to demo a skill away from your students safely. One person always needs to be with the class.

Progression of Learning - Student Practice Rig and Sail out. On-Water Practice:

Rock the Boat Out and Back Description:

Launch Laser without sail, boom and mainsheet, and insert rudder and daggerboard. Have students rock to a fixed point and back. Variation launch with mainsail but tie mainsheet tight so boom cannot swing too far side to side to work on propelling boat with apparent wind created by rocking.

Tip: To control class on the water, launch boats a couple at a time until the students get the hang of no-wind kinetics AND enough space between each to avoid collisions.

90 On-Water Game: Kinetics Race Description:

Set up a Windward/Leeward course with 1 buoy for a windward mark and 2 buoys to mark a “starting area.” Blow multiple short whistles “to get everyone ready” and blow 1 long whistle to start the game! Aſter the whistle, all boats are allowed to use whatever means desired for getting to the windward mark and back making a leſt turn; this includes techniques such as quick flattens, rocking, pumping, ooching, sculling, paddling, and swimming.

Tip: if students are having a hard time going upwind, skew the windward/leeward to make it easier.
