Progression of Learning - Land Drill
Skill-Based: Physical movements of focus skill. Instructor description:
Set up a course and have students walk around the course to demonstrate proper mark roundings and avoiding collisions in a confined area. Instructor blows one long whistle and students must go inside the confined area of the course. Students stay inside the confined area practicing avoiding collisions until the instructor blows two short whistles which means they go back to walking on the outside of the course. As students progress the course can shrink or change shape.

Instructor should demonstrate walking around the course and what to do when either one long or two short whistles are blown. Make sure to show students what a starboard or port rounding would look like.
Each student individually tries while instructor gives specific and constructive feedback.

Activity-Based: Practice the water activities on land. Instructor description:
Have students walk around either a triangle, square or diamond course (whatever one you will use on the water) to practice making mark roundings. As sailors walk around the course, tell them specific skills they will need to perform at certain marks like they will do during the on the water game. Examples: “Round windward mark twice”; “Sail backwards from mark 3 to mark 4”; “Use No- Wind Kinetics to sail from mark 1 to mark 2”. “Touch the buoy with your hand but not your boat!”

Instructor demonstrates how to sail around a mark without touching it with less than a boat length to the mark. Demonstrate both a port and starboard rounding of a mark.

SAFETY - Make sure you have another instructor or high-level student to co-teach with you if you are going to demo a skill away from your students safely. One person always needs to be with the class.

Sail a Course Description:
Instructor picks either a small triangle (harder), square (easier) course, or a diamond course (easier) to have sailors sail around in a continuous looping pattern, either to starboard or port. Instructor blows one long whistle and students must go inside the confined area of the course. Students stay inside the confined area practicing avoiding collisions until the instructor blows two short whistles which means they go back to sailing on the outside of the course. As students progress the course can shrink or change shape.

Set a course: triangle, square or diamond will work best. Have sailors sail around the course and perform a specific skill at specific marks. Variation: Have sailors compete to see how many marks they can round in a certain time limit, and award points for each successful maneuver. As sailors improve, increase skill requirements.
