Lesson Plan: Using Telltales

Instructor Lesson Plan Focus Skill

Using Telltales Class Factors

Students: Number, Age, Skill Level, Boat-Type Time: Duration of class

Two Hours 7-12 mph

12 students, 11-12 years old, Intermediate, Double-Handed Goal(s) What do you hope to accomplish?

Sailors will be able to identify the 3 locations of telltales on a C420. Tey will be able to steer and adjust sails to ‘fly’ sail telltales. Tey will also be able to stay ‘in the groove’ going upwind by watching the telltales closely to keep them flying consistently.

Setup

• Whiteboard/Markers • Magnetic boats

Chalk Talk: Weather: Air & Water Temp, Wind Speed, Forecast Land Drill:

• Rigged boat on land • Cassette tape or yarn

10 minutes

Materials needed to teach each step in the progression of learning, prep before students arrive.

On Water: • Four marks

Progression of Learning - Chalk Talk Purpose Value Statement: Explain why this focus skill will help connect to their sailing knowledge.

Using telltales is a key factor in making your boat move more efficiently and therefore faster by offering more information about where the wind is coming from in relation to the boat.

Prior Skill Knowledge: What skills you need to know before learning about this new skill (brief review)

Upwind sailing. Artful Questions (1-2) to engage youth and help them connect to their prior experiences

How can you tell you where the wind is coming from without telltales? What is apparent wind?

Content: Introduction:

Tere are 3 types of telltales in this lesson, they are on the luff of the jib, the leech of the mainsail, and added to both side stays. We will primarily use the ones on the jib. Talking point with detail:

Telltale Locations

Name 3 different locations of telltales (sails, standing rigging, masthead). Telltales work best when the boat is in “pull mode” or when sailing on a beam reach course or closer to the wind.

Trim to Telltales Adjust sail trim with sheets to fly sail telltales.

• Describe how when wind is efficiently flowing over both sides of the sail, both telltales on either side of the sail will be ‘flying’ straight back.

• When the inside telltale is fluttering, pull in the sail! • When the outside telltale is fluttering, ease out the sail! • If both telltales are drooping down, the sail needs to be let out a lot!

Watch Your Telltales Hold steady course “sailing in the groove” by focusing on

flying telltales straight back.

• But someone has to be looking around too! You need to practice watching your telltales and looking around to avoid collisions!

• Tis shows good, balanced flow! Too High Wind

• Look at the Leech telltale while sailing upwind and see if it is fluttering half on the windward side and half on the leeward side.

Check for Understanding: Ask questions that probe for understanding. Question:

Just Right Wind Too Low Wind Steer to Telltales Adjust course with tiller to fly sail telltales.

• Describe how when wind is efficiently flowing over both sides of the sail, both telltales on either side of the sail will be ‘flying’ straight back.

• When the inside tell tale is fluttering, the boat is too close to the wind so bear away!

• When the outside telltale is fluttering, the boat is too far away from the wind so head up!

15 minutes

• If both telltales are drooping down, the boat is too far downwind so head up!

• Do tell tales work when there is no wind? Do they work better when it’s windier? • What are the advantages and disadvantages of a masthead telltale and a telltale on the side stay?
