TRAPEZING Trapping, or using a trapeze while sailing, is a method of getting more weight
outboard of a sailboat to counteract wind pressure in sails. Using a trapeze allows a sailboat to be sailed in higher wind strengths with greater boat speed. Many boats are rigged with a trapeze for the crew, or the skipper and crew.
In the right
wind strengths, a trapeze can be used when sailing upwind all the way down to a beam or broad reach. In addition to improving a boat’s performance, there are few thrills in sailing like hanging off the trapeze wire while the sailboat is planing. Trapezing for some sailors is the best part of sailing.
Sailor Tip: Tightening the trapeze harness too much decreases the ability of the sailor to fully extend or stand up on the rail. Each skipper and crew should “buddy check” that straps, straps and lines are tucked in. Wearing a safety pinny helps to tuck all the straps and lines away.
