Mast Tip Lift Rescue This method can be used if sailors are in or removed from the water.

Forestay Shroud

speed, slowly approach from a direction forward of the mast. This keeps the safety- rescue boat from running over the mainsail and avoids interference with the sail as the sailboat comes upright.

2Make contact near the top of the mast and turn off the engine. If the mast tip is submerged too far below the water to reach, then approach the sailboat perpendicular to the forestay, grab the forestay or shroud, and walk hand over hand up the mast.

3 Lift the mast tip and move hand over hand down the mast and shroud to bring the sailboat upright.

Centerboard Push Rescue If the sailors are in the safety-rescue boat, the centerboard push method will perform successfully for most situations.

1 Person grabs the centerboard and pushes downward until the sailboat comes upright.

2Person grabs gunwale and shroud to complete righting.

Opti / Pram Capsize Rescue The Centerboard Push method is typically used for a capsized opti or pram. Because of the shape of its hull, an opti or pram may scoop significant water as it comes upright. There are two methods for removing the water. One method is to have the sailor bail out the water while the safety-rescue boat holds onto the sailboat. Another method involves bringing the sailor onto the safety-rescue boat and draining most of the water by lifting the bow of the sailboat onto the side of the safety-rescue boat.

Draining a Pram Start by removing the daggerboard from the sailboat and bringing the sailor onto the safety-rescue boat, then perform the following steps.

WIND

1 Grab a corner of the bow and pull it onto the side of the boat to drain out the water.

2 Once emptied, slowly lower the sailboat back into the water.
