Progression of Learning - Land Drill


Skill-Based: Physical movements of focus skill. Instructor description:


Rig boat with jib sail only and main halyard holding up the end of the boom as a mock mainsail. Launch boat, attach rudder, lower centerboard, and tie boat alongside dock at bow and stern on a downwind course. Review step by step how to jibe from broad reach to broad reach, correct body position, hand position, tiller switch, and adjustments that need to be made on the exit from the jibe to quickly find broad reach. Additionally identify when you may accidentally jibe and how much to raise the centerboard. Instructors can pull and ease the bow and stern lines to change the orientation of the boat for broad reaching or dead down wind. Instructor demo.


Instructor demonstrates in the tied up boat as a skipper and a crew to show body position, hand position, and switching sides. Additionally show centerboard all the way down, all the way up, and partially up for broad reach.


Each student individually tries while instructor gives specific and constructive feedback.

Activity-Based: Practice the water activities on land. Instructor description:


Set up three objects as buoys of the course in a triangle shape. Set up a paddle on the ground or have someone hold to show the true wind direction. Te course should be oriented to have one upwind leg, two broad reach legs, and one jibe. Have students line up in pairs behind the instructor and walk the triangle course. Instructors should make announcements about sail trim, point of sail and steering on each leg and at each mark of the course. Let students try on their own and the instructor asks questions about sail trim, points or sail, and steering.

Demonstrate proper body position and sail trim on a broad reach course for both the skipper and crew positions as well as shows the steps for jibing from a broad reach to broad reach course. Have class sit on a dock while Instructor and student volunteer demonstrate close to the dock.

Triangle Course Description:


Instructor sets a triangle course with two marks set in a windward/leeward configuration. A third mark is set about halfway between the windward and leeward marks, and laterally away from the windward/leeward course line. Sailors sail around all the marks in a continuous triangle pattern and the instructor provides feedback on their broad reach sailing (sail trim, body placement, and steering) and their broad reach jibes as sailors go around the course.

Complete an adventure sail to a downwind location; start by towing all boats upwind to sail longer downwind course; begin downwind adventure sail by having students following the coachboat path from broad reach to broad reach on a wide zig-zag course; then blow one long whistle release the group on a downwind race back to the dock!
