12 students, 10-14 years old, Intermediate, CFJ, Double-Handed Setup • Whiteboard/Markers • Rigged boat on land Chalk Talk: Weather: Air & Water Temp, Wind Speed, Forecast Land Drill: 15 minutes

Students will be able to safely depart and land on both the windward and leeward sides of a dock or practice mark.


Progression of Learning - Chalk Talk Purpose Value Statement: Explain why this focus skill will help connect to their sailing knowledge.


Every day of sailing requires both a departure and return to the dock or beach. Students will be able to launch and depart from a dock no matter where the wind is coming from. Tis involves mastering the glide zone, lowering our main sail on the water or unhooking our clew if needed, and sailing downwind with just the jib.

Beginner Departure and Landing, Parts of the Sail, Control Lines and Control Speed. Artful Questions (1-2) to engage youth and help them connect to their prior experiences


Can anyone recall the steps required for a departure and a landing? Why would we rather dock on the leeward side of a dock rather than the windward side? What point of sail is best for lowering the mainsail?


Content: Introduction:


Today we will learn how to Depart and Land on both the windward and leeward side of the dock. Landing on the leeward side will have us practice ‘the glide zone’ and our skills we learned to slow the boat down. Landing on the windward side will have us practicing turning quickly into the wind to stop the boat and lower our mainsail and then using just our jib to sail downwind to the dock so we can land.


Talking point with detail: Leeward side of dock


• Glide Zone: Review the beginner Departure and Landing, how a boat glides in when docking to leeward of a dock. Show the luffing of sails and turning into the wind to slow the boat down.


• Help!: Other students on the dock will help departing and landing boats.


Windward side of dock


• Push Off: Draw a windward Departure, with assistance from someone pushing the boat off the dock and immediately sailing upwind.


• Drop the Main: Draw the path of a windward landing. Show where the boat would shoot into the wind in order to drop their mainsail and then sail only under jib to the dock.


• Help!: Other students on the dock will help departing and landing boats.

Check for Understanding: Ask questions that probe for understanding.


Is it better to go too fast or slow when landing or departing? Where should our boat be pointed to lower the main?
